We are watching this movie and I was wondering how much truth there was to the back story of a town/city during the great depression having a no dogs allowed law? And it's enforcement with a dog cather going around and taking everyone's dogs and any strays. I tried to google search but after looking through the top results from a handful of searches I found the task of trying to find out that way was more tedious that it was worth. So I figured I'd have better luck posting a thread. I figure perhaps someone on here knows more about the great depression and would know the answer.

Here's a clipping from Salt Lake City.  So it appears there is one city out there that not only have a ban on dogs but all pets.

I was sort of thinking that because the movie was based in the great depression that the no dogs allowed was some sort of great depression thing and had a reason linked to that as to why. That article doesn't include any of the reasoning behind why it is banning pets. Or if the ban actually happened. I guess more looking into this example would determine that. I'm still curious about the particular relating to the great depression. If it was something common or not and why they would have such a thing.

In respect to the movie whom you are referring to I don't believe it was the depression that caused the ban,  Its true the movie was set during the depression years but as noted in the film an ordinance was passed many, many years prior and the present-day mayor was one that follows the rules verbatim.  It also appears the mayor had some personal  feelings against dogs as he extended the town's boundary to include a nearby dog shelter.  And I don't believe he was aware of his dogcatcher/brother's illegal dogfighting operation.  It was a good movie especially their doggy style version of the "The Twelve Days of Christmas" song

I must have missed the reference to the ordinance having been passed before the depression. I still find it odd that they would have one for that.

I don't know, but I wish I lived in that town.  Only if they allowed cats, though.
