Great topic, UpC! This is a lot harder than it seems. Here's a start.

Suburbia
Jesus' Son
American Beauty
Fight Club
The Big Lebowski
Man Bites Dog is so terrifying. That's quite a statement putting it on this list.

Although I am pretty fascinated with the line between the real and the unreal, especially when it comes to horrific stuff like that... interesting.
You know, if you can hunt it down, you should really check out this documentary called S&Man by J.T. Petty. It's a documentary on the underground horror scene, and it's really interesting and different (also shot on HD!). I recommend not reading too much about it before you see it though, it's so much better when you go into it unbiased, and it's managed to stir up quite a bit of controversy in the small groups who have been lucky enough to see it so far.

From what you said, I think you'd really really appreciate this one.
I saw it at a festival.. it was made by HDNet films, and they have it listed as a "coming soon" title on their page... I hope it will get a DVD release in the near future.
Film Geek was hilarious! I'm adding Cinemania to my queue.
Pro Bum, along the lines of "Film Geek," have you seen Cinema Paradiso? A Sicilian boy grows up immersed in the cinema. Portrays life as a movie .....
I love that film also! It's just beautiful on all fronts including sentiment!
1. The Little Mermaid (my all time favorite movie, I still cry when King Triton waves goodbye to Ariel at the end)
2. The Wizard of Oz (what child is not defined by this movie? it is a quintessential part of being a child, watching is more than mere entertainment is an integral part of growing up)
3. All About My Mother (although I have always liked Almodóvar, this film made me obssessed with his movies)
4. The Bodyguard (I don't know why, maybe it is just the music)
5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (introduced me to Buffy the series)
6. Gone with the Wind (the first classic I saw)
7. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (introduced me to Asian films)
8. E.T. (one of the most depressing and amazing films I have seen)
9. Independence Day (I saw this movie every day one summer)
10. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

11. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (shocking, amazing and truly genious)
12. Dawn of the Dead, the remake (started my obsession with zombie movies)
13. Night of the Living Dead (Romero)
14. Notting Hill
15. Pretty Woman
16. The American President
17. Thesis (the only movie that has truly scared me)
18. Sexo, Pudor y Lagrimas (I saw Mexican Cinema in a new light)
19. Dangerous Beauty
20. Incredibles (love it)

21.Requiem for a Dream (traumatized me, depressed me and made me cry for a long time)
22. Kill Bill
23. Diary of a Cannibal and Zombie Nation (because they are the worst movies ever made and I still cannot believe I lost hours of my life to them)
