Hello all. I've just finished watching disc 4 from series 4 of "The 4400". It's time for me to "absorb" another series. I would like some recommendations on some TRULY GREAT series, not average or low entertainment ones. I realize that this is completely subjective and some will give suggestions of what they consider to be great series, and I might not be interested in them. But if everyone recommends what they consider to be "the best", then law of average will dictate that the majority of the suggestions will at least be considered to be better than average by the general consensus. To give you an idea of what I've personally seen and consider to be the best (I've already seen) they are: The 4400, Heroes, Nip/Tuck, Dexter, Ugly Betty, The Office, The L Word. Please keep these in mind when you make your suggestions as any series that are similar in nature will at least get my attention. I think that others will also benefit from reading this list, so please post any and all of what you consider to be the best out there!!

I would suggest watching at least the 1st season and the movie before starting the current season which airs its first episode sunday jan 11th.
-Lost
Must see all episodes before watching the new season. One missed episode will leave you without tons of info.
-30 Rock
Hilarious, funny, Tina Fey. Great stuff.

Older Shows:
-M.A.S.H.
Nothing like the good ole 4077th to give you a few laughs. Starts Alan Alda as Capt. Hawkeye Pierce.
-Hogan's Heroes
The funny business that goes on around Stalag 13 is genuinely hilarious.
-Get Smart
Used to watch this everyone morning before middle school. (Now I watch HH or MASH) They would air 2 episodes between 7-8 am on TV Land. Wonder if it's still on.

For some reason it's not out here yet but I know it's available in other countries. The mighty Boosh...absurd british humor.

Dark Angel
I thought this series was short lived, but I really liked it when it first came out.

Absolutely it was so depressing that it only lasted two seasons.

I am going through that now with my Pushing Daisies, got to be the quirkiest sitcom on TV currently and it has been cancelled and now there is talk of not even showing the last episode(s) of the season, what kind of crap is that. You keep some crap like the Bachelor but get rid of a show that won like 9 awards and anything they didn't win they were nominated for. Oh well hopefully they will make a movie to finish the series like they said after being notified of cancellation.

I liked one season of pushing daisies but it got old after that and came off my Tivo auto record list.

I think one of the best series ever was West Wing. That being said, for escaping but still having to think I liked Star Trek TNG

After a few seasons I grew tired of the constant pedeconferencing technique used on West Wing by Aaron Sorkin - which he later also overused on the failed Buzz to Bust 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip'.

I miss TNG and the crew. I hope they do another Star Trek.

I would agree some of the techniques used on West Wing did get well worn towards the end but compaired to some of the other obtuse trash on the air; then and now; it was exceptional.
I also miss the ST franchise and hope it returns soon.
Another really good show was Sports Night. A quirky little sitcom that wasn't really about sports.

A recent favorite of mine is Weeds, if you liked Dexter and Nip/Tuck you might find it interesting. I didn't think I would like it at first, but I watched the first two seasons with Watch Instantly and making my way through the third season. Also Six Feet Under is great, I should start getting the second season soon. Michael C. Hall is great in Six Feet Under.

I may revisit Six Feet Under. For some reason I missed many episodes and perhaps a season or two even though I have had Tivo or DVRs since 1999 (early adopter). I think I was busy starting my business and TV and movies took a backseat for a while.

One thing for sure, the last 6 minutes of Six Feet Under's final episode is as good as TV gets. Don't watch the final 6 minutes on Youtube, you won't get the full effect without knowing all the characters.

stranded on a deserted island (with a dvd player and electricity) and i can only have one drama and one comedy forever... there's a lot of great tv that i'd miss... but there's no doubt i'd have to go with:

six feet under
arrested development

I wish Arrested Development was on instant watch so I could see if I like it before renting it on DVD. I never heard of it when it was on and I am up on most all tv shows. Probably why it was canceled ;-)

Maybe it's rerunning somewhere.

It seems this show really got no respect. From Wikipedia:

Fox aired the final four episodes of the third season in a block as a two-hour series finale on February 10, 2006, opposite the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Don't watch much TV, actually... the wife and daughters are constantly watching reality TV of one type or another, which drives this man insane. So I'm on my computer a lot. That means Watch Instantly and Hulu, mostly.

That being said, my current guilty pleasure is sure to incur the wrath of the rest of y'all... Burn Notice. I'm sorry I have to admit this, but I really enjoy that show. Bruce Campbell is so friggin cool. Yeah, I know, I know...

I also watch Frank TV episodes online, though he's getting kind of redundant now. Great impressionist, though.

Dexter gets lots of love around here. I watched the pilot episode, and that was it for me. I also made it an episode or two into Season One of Dead Like Me, Numb3rs, Bones, The Closer, Rome, Pushing Daisies, Carnivale, Fringe... nothing seems to click with me. I did make it through the whole first season of the Sopranos, with a favorable opinion of it... never tried Six Feet Under, better add disc 1 to my Q...
