Hello all. I've just finished watching disc 4 from series 4 of "The 4400". It's time for me to "absorb" another series. I would like some recommendations on some TRULY GREAT series, not average or low entertainment ones. I realize that this is completely subjective and some will give suggestions of what they consider to be great series, and I might not be interested in them. But if everyone recommends what they consider to be "the best", then law of average will dictate that the majority of the suggestions will at least be considered to be better than average by the general consensus. To give you an idea of what I've personally seen and consider to be the best (I've already seen) they are: The 4400, Heroes, Nip/Tuck, Dexter, Ugly Betty, The Office, The L Word. Please keep these in mind when you make your suggestions as any series that are similar in nature will at least get my attention. I think that others will also benefit from reading this list, so please post any and all of what you consider to be the best out there!!

Six Feet Under is a fan-freaking-tastic series.

I recently finished watching the whole series and I loved it.

Agreed! Six Feet Under is absolutely on the top of my list for favorite series.

We loved Six Feet Under but felt it fizzled towards the end with too many personal love problems -- always a sign a show is going down the tube. When they dealt with the problems and intrigues of the funeral business and the customers, it was gangbusters. Loved the rival company trying to buy them, the wall of fancy caskets, on and on. It's what makes The Wire such a winner -- it dealt with real bureaucracies and how the people worked inside them.

My suggestion is my all time favorite, Hamish Mcbeth. It may be somewhat hard to understand due to the Scottish brouges but it is worth the effort. I think the star of the series is Robert Carlye. Look it up on Netflix. They have it available. You won't be dissapointed.

Californication - I admit i haven't finished season 1, but it is awesome.

Firefly - i don't know if you'll like it, but i think it's one of the best, if not the best, out there. Worth a shot (i'm a huge Whedon fan - love Buffy and Angel and can't wait for Dollhouse)

I keep hearing awesome things about Mad Men, but don't know if it's any good - just passing the message along.

Arrested Development - I just finished the series. It's a must see.

I don't know if you've seen Lost, but my experience is that it is sooo much better watching it on DVD. I get easily bored when trying to watch it on TV (which might not make sense) but love watching the seasons on DVD

Dead Like Me - again, haven't seen it all, but I love what I have seen.

Same with Big Love.

OK, i think i'm done.

jo17ie, Have you seen Action: The Complete Series? Here's the synopsis:
Following the efforts of slick Hollywood producer Peter Dragon (Jay Mohr) to advance his foundering career, this short-lived and controversial comedy series was likely too close to the truth to survive. Relying on his three stated pillars of showbiz -- prostitution, nepotism and dishonesty -- Dragon's "ethics" make for an entertaining ride. Guest stars include Sandra Bullock, Salma Hayek, Keanu Reeves and Scott Wolf ("Party of Five").

The show ran for 1 season and was axed. Supposadly this was about real producers, actors, etc. It's available to Watch Instantly and I thought the comedy was as clever as Arrested Development. It's hilarious but only for those who aren't offended easily.
Come on people the main character is named Peter Dragon - ya gotta love that!

This sounds awesome. I think I had it on my Q from you mentioning it earlier, but didn't have time to watch it. I now have time because i hand in my TV spec script to class tomorrow. (which means I can stop watching Weeds in every free second).

On the down side, I have a mac, but maybe i'll use my roommates computer - he loves his PC, and i love stealing it for the Watch Instantly goodness.

Thanks for the heads up (again), i'll be checking it out soon.

Good, let me know what you think.

TV Spec Script!!! OMG - you will love this. The whole series revolves around a script writer and the different "influences" on his script.

My faves would be Battlestar Galactica, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Angel, Veronica Mars, Odyssey 5, Lost, Dead Like Me, and of course Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Check out Dexter. I loved it. One of the most well written and conceived tv series in well... forever.
