I'm in the middle of watching Under the Volcano, but was a bit peeved to read the top review on NF, which is an unflagged spoiler. (It gives the ending away!) I flagged it, maybe interested others can as well.
Yep, I found a different version of the poster for "This Gun For Hire." It appeared to be by the same artist, so I cut Alan Ladd out again and thought I'd try this look for a while. I don't think I like it as much, so I'll likely change back soon.

I advise you to go to an avatar doctor and have some liver tests done stat!!
Read your review for Sisters of the Gion. I haven't seen it yet, but what you describe is pretty much what I was expecting. I love older Japanese films, but I've yet to see a pre-war film that I really loved.
Having said that, PB, don't give up on Mizoguchi. If nothing else, please give Ugetsu a try.
children underground is heartbreaking and powerful. it's an unforgettable film/documentary but that's not necessarily a good thing. it's a hard watch and i wish the camera person filming would have stepped in on occasion when someone's getting hurt - but that's another discussion. it's a good film to see what happens to some children who aren't wanted. this should be required viewing for those against abortion, children shouldn't have to suffer what unwanted kids endure.

I've seen Children Underground and gave it 5 stars.
Jupiter's Wife - 3 stars and Unknown White Male - 1 star.
I'd recommend Children Underground and Jupiter's Wife. As for White Male, in my opinion the story is a hoax and while a good doc could certainly be made from a fabricated story - this one wasn't well made or interesting.
You're right that there are a lot of choices of documentaries. It's one of my favorites genres. Profesional Bum has some great ones on his list. I just q'd several of them - Thanks PB!
Here some that I've really enjoyed - Excellent Docs and Interesting Docs. Both lists are great docs I'd recommend - I just broke my doc list into 2 since it was getting so long.
I watched Control last night. Again the parts to make the sum are greater than the final product. I didn't know a lot about Ian Curtis' private life and like many of these music biographies the artist is tortured and just isn't all that nice of a person sometimes. He makes crappy decisions. Also I really like Anton Corbjin's work in music videos and photography and really wanted more out of this film. I was hoping it would be as visually appealing as Tarseem's work in film has been. Alas his direction and choices fell kind of flat. In the end my heart was broken for Ian's wife and child but I was left feeling cold about Mr. Curtis himself.
Love, love will tear us a part again...
Up Next: Stuart Gordon's Stuck, I'm kind of giddy for this one.
