Finding your External Profile link and Anonymous Friends links

John just asked an excellent question:

"How do I find Anonymous Friends Link. I'm also having trouble finding Outward Profile page URL. I think I'm doing what it said. But get nothing I guess I'm doing something wrong."

1. Anonymous Friends Link. This allows strangers to connect to you as Friends, but doesn't reveal your real name nor email address. (Yes, i think it sometimes shows your first name in some situations - a bug that is being dealt with - but it's still pretty anonymous, and better than being just a "Fave." To find this link: (a) go to the "Friends & Community" tab; (b) In the sidebar, click on the "Friends and Faves" button - which takes you to the Friends page. (c) In the subnav on the top of the page, notice "INVITE FRIENDS" link. Click this and you'll see a pair of ways to connect to others. The one on the left is with your real name, using real email addresses... the one on the right is an anonymous LINK that you can post on your blog, or here, or wherever. This is the best way to connect securely to strangers at netflix.

2. Your Outward Facing Profile page. This is how the world sees you when they click on your avatar or name when they find one of your reviews or lists on the Netflix site. The problem is that its easy for others to get to here, but hard for you to get here yourself. (And it's my fault - sorry. There should be a link directly from your Profile page to here, but it wasn't executed before i left. My bad.) The work around to get this link is: (a) follow steps above A and B to get to the Community Page. (b) Click on your Friends and Faves button in the sidebar. Now you're looking at YOUR Friends. (c) Select any of your Friends and click on them, so you're looking at THEIR profile page. (d) Click on the sidebar button to see THEIR FRIENDS (which, obviously, includes you). (e) Find yourself in their list of Friends, click on your avatar, and see your External Profile page. This is what you're looking for. Grab the URL from the screen and feel free to pass it around or post it here on your profile.

It should be so so so much easier to do these things, but alas, it's not. I'm impressed so many have figured it out, but sorry many of you have not. Good luck.

For #2. Your Outward Facing Profile page. - If you don't have any friends or Faves (yet), or, you don't have a review yet, [if you already have written a review, then go straight to step c] you can get to the profile by (a) writing a review to a movie, (b) and wait till it gets published. (c) Afterwards, you can then go to that page of the movie, look through the reviews till you find the one you wrote, (d) and then click on your profile that is linked to the movie review. The page should be one that only has your Nickname, the link that is shown in the address bar is the link that you 're looking for.

I hope this is clear enough.

What I can't do is find the "Friends & Community" tab I don't see this on My Page.

John... it's on the top between the Movies You'll Heart and DVD Sale $5.99 tabs.

So what if you are over on the Netflix site, you see a review you really like so you jump to that person's profile page, read a few more reviews and like what you read, then notice the movie ratings seem right on. You also notice that person's "similarity" to you is like less than 30%, however that isn't relevant to your wanting to add that person as a friend. That person also doesn't appear to be a member on this Netflix Community site.

Apparently the best you can do is add the person as a Favorite. There doesn't seem to be any means to even propose to the other person that you want to be a friend over on the Netflix site (like you can on this community site). So, unless the person reveals his "anonymous friends link" (which that person may or may not know how to determine) either on the Netflix profile page, or belongs to this Netflix Community and reveals that link here, you're SOL trying to add as a friend.

Am I missing something here, or is this a deliberate non-feature by the Netflix engineers in the structure design of the "Friends & Community" features on the Netflix site?

I just wanted to add here that if you don't have any friends on the site and don't want to write a review, an easier way to see your outward facing profile is to manually change the URL.

When you click on "Profile" on your sidebar, the URL will be something like http://www.netflix.com/YourProfile?prid=##### etc. If you change "Your" to "Stranger" so that it reads http://www.netflix.com/StrangerProfile?prid=##### etc it should work as well.

You can not get to your stranger profile straight from here. Just hover over the "My Queue" tab above and select "My Profile".

It'll take you straight to http://www.netflix.com/StrangerProfile which will be your stranger profile if you are logged in at the Netflix website.

Just click on the "My Profile" sub-menu under "My Queue" as explained two posts higher. It's about as easy as you can make it.
