Has anyone else had problem with movies at the top of their queue taking alot longer to get. I used to not have to wait long for recent movies and in last couple of months, I can not seem to get recent movies for a long time. Several people have told me that Blockbuster has faster turn-around on movies. Wonder if anyone knows if this is true. Also, I was told that you can return them to store and get a new movie.

So, if I understand correctly, if I get less movies a month, I have a better chance of getting the movies I really want. So do i need to take a lower plan. Many times I have had to go rent a movie cause my husband was wanting to see the movie and got tired of waiting for netflix to send it.

It's not what plan you are on -- it's your turn-around time. If you're on the $17 3-discs-out plan and you watch 6 discs per month, you're essentially paying Netflix $2.83 per disc. If you're on the same plan but watch 12 discs per month, you're paying Netflix $1.42 per disc. Netflix has to decide how to prioritize scarce resources (fewer discs than customers) and they've chosen to prioritize their best customers (which is not how much you're paying per month, but how much you're paying per disc). Some people hate this (mostly I guess the people who turn discs around in a day or less), but I think it's fair. For the record, I'm paying Netflix about $0.90 per disc. I have some discs with Very Long Waits, but I have so many discs in my queue that I'm always getting something I want to watch, and Netflix's effective low price has dramatically changed the way I approach movie-viewing, allowing me to explore genres I never would have before just because of the price and availability. Now I'm starting to explore interlibrary loan for the few long-tail gaps in Netflix's inventory.
For every title I get which I don't expect to get, there's another that I do expect to get and don't. For example, I find it odd that such a high profile title like Michael Clayton, which just released, is on Very Long Wait for me. I had expected NF to buy a ton of copies, and even if there were a wait for it, I'm very surprised it's a Very Long Wait.
On the other hand, another new release, Redacted, I expected not to receive mainly because I figured there would be high initial demand yet a relatively low inventory.
I just recieved Blade Runner: The Final Cut, and two copies of Michael Clayton in today's mail...maybe should send the extra MC to the guy who accidentally sent in his own dvd....
no, they arrived in separate envelopes, and according to my queue, I only have one MC, so technically I only need return one. But I'm sure lotsa folks are waiting, so I'll turn both around today.

No it is not a trap, I started this post and i am just a Grandmother of 2 and another due in 2.5 weeks from Ky. and wanted to know if others were having a problem with getting recent releases. Please do not be so negative. I am just interested if others are having same problem as i am.

On one hand, I've had Sicko at the top of my Q since it came out - it just went down to a Short Wait for me, so I'm optimistic. On the other, I'm feeling pretty lucky with Michael Clayton and American Gangster in my possession already, despite the holiday and their popularity.
One tip I can give you is to get your movies back to the distribution center on the Monday before a new movie you want releases. Netflix will send Tuesday's new releases out on Monday (since you can't get them before the release date) and this tactic has worked pretty well for me (it's not 100%, obviously).
This is a tip, which I read on the blog a few months ago, which I find to be working for me.
Check the location of the address from which netflix sent you that movie title. If it is from a different location, than the one you live in, don't return the DVD in that envelope, it will simply take LONGER for the DVDs to be returned. Instead, place TWO in an envelope of the distribution center closest to you.
Also, this is a general tip, consider returning two dvds in one envelope. This way, you'll have extra envelopes lying around if one were to rip and be unusable. Or you need an envelope for the above reason.
actually, i did this pretty often during my first year until i saved up about 20 or so envelopes. what i've found is that the whichever disc has the bar code towards the scanning slot will get checked in that day which the second disc won't until the following. since i usually have to wait a second day per title to get a rental shipped, it usually works out to about the same if i just used the original envelope (unless it was shipped from CA or OR).
