Damaged Blu-Ray Discs

I've had Netflix for over 5 years and switched to blu-ray about 7 months ago. I never had much problem with regular DVDs over the years, but the rate of damaged unplayable blu-rays seems to be much higher. This doesn't bother me that much except for one thing I've noticed on the damaged discs. Many of them have the same visible blemish - a small triangular crack/blemish on the edge that's obviously creating the problem.

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this? I'm thinking that perhaps there is some machine that Netflix uses to handle these discs that sometimes scratches the disc this way. Or maybe it's some popular blu-ray player is doing this. Has anyone seen this problem?

Today I received my eighth cracked Blu-ray disk out of a total of thirteen disks received. I also asked the customer service rep how they were handling resolving this. He said at this time they are not but always take customer feedback into account. I read online netflix reps think the problem is infrequent, well I can tell you since signing up I've received 1 good blu ray DVD out of 7 movies I had sent to me. It's about time to beef up the packaging, it must be costing them a fortune to keep replacing these blu ray discs. I can't believe proper packaging costs more than replacing broken discs. Or are they not replacing the discs and just keep resending them to customers, if so that is pretty dirty. I'm switching to blockbuster if the next batch show up bad. What's the point of having a unlimited amount of rentals when all I do is keep sending them back and never getting to watch a movie or only part of a movie?; ▶ Reply to This

I got my first blu-ray disk today and it will not play in my PS3. (yes I have the latest software update) I don't see any cracks in the disk, but there are several scratches. I have reported it to Netflix as non-playable and returning it to them. Kind of frustrating since I just bought the PS3 this week to mainly play blu-ray from netflix. We'll see if the next one has problems playing too. All of the normal DVD's I've received have been just fine, so must be an issue with blu-ray disks.; ▶ Reply to This

I examined the disc and saw no visible blemishes or nicks, no fingerprints, etc. On the third try it loaded, but about halfway through it froze. Three entire segments of the DVD were unplayable (8,9,10).

What I'm wondering is whether anyone thinks people might be intentionally rendering controversial DVDs unplayable.

p.s. I just received notice that Netflix is increasing its fee for Blu-Ray access from $1 to $3 a month. Guess I'm done with Blu-Rays, Netflix, and I'm this close to being done with you too.; ▶ Reply to This
