Mr. Bean's Holiday This is simply because my 'friends' are often too intellectual or main stream. Now if we are talking NF friends, that is a whole different story. This Bean trip is simply a wonderful, mindful, life is good kind of movie that is good for the soul.
Our family is assembling for the holidays, and we were sitting around discussing movies that we've seen that we suspect our friends haven't seen. So, here are a few that we discussed.
1. The Castle (Australian) -- This has probably edged out Waiting for Guffman as our family's favorite. I'm more of a drama guy, but this is more of a comedy. It has two of the best lines ever in movies -- "He's dreamin" and "It's the Vibe." This is a heartwarming yet hilariously funny story of a family that is losing their home (their "castle") because the government wants to build a longer runway at the airport.
2. Waiting for Guffman -- This has become a movie with quite a cult following, so many have seen it. Christopher Guest is simply great at what he does. From the opening discussion of where to put the snipers on the roof of the buildings in this small town (for crowd control at the sequicentennial) to the credits, we love this movie every time we see it. My father and brother owned and operated a dinner theatre, and we thought they would love it, and they both hated it. You have been warned.
3. Kenny -- We just watched this, and we have enjoyed it more talking about it after we saw it. This is the movie about a guy who works for a portable toilet company. "He's #1 with your #2" -- that's how it's advertised on the CD cover. I was laughing before I started it. It is filled with words that describe bodily waste, so you have to be able to deal with that. But if you have a bit of a wacky sense of humor, you'll probably love this. The actor who plays Kenny is so good that you can't believe he is anything but the guy who cleans up and pumps the toilets out.
4. Hands on a Hard Body -- This one is hard to find. I lost my copy and had to pay $80 to get one on eBay. This is a documentary that could not have been cast and acted better if you had hired top Hollywood talent. It is the real story of a contest held by the Nissan dealer in Longview, Texas. People put their hands on a Nissan Hard Body Pick-up, and the last one standing wins the truck. I tell people stories from the movie, and then I feel like I must have exaggerated, and I watch the movie again and realize I hadn't exaggerated at all. The Snickers eater, the folks with the special air conditioning unit, and the "gospel" singing contestant were my favorites.
5. Something the Lord Made -- This was HBO, so many may have missed it. It is the true story of how open heart surgery was "invented." Amazing but true -- it was a black carpenter hired to clean up around the medical lab. I love this movie!
My family says I left a few important ones out. My Date with Drew, The Chorus, Saint Ralph, Kinky Boots, Paper Clips, Spitfire Grill, Hula Girls, and The Dish. My Date with Drew is a wonderful documentary that played more like a movie to me. Paper Clips is an incredible documentary that fills you with amazement that some young Tennessee kids could do something like this. It, too, was as enjoyable to me as a blockbuster movie. The Dish is the story of Australia's contribution to the Apollo 11 mission -- true and yet very funny story. Kinky Boots, Hula Girls, and Saint Ralph are all underdog stories. All of these are 5-stars on our list of 1,822 movies!
Well, I know for certain that most of my friends haven't seen a lot of the classics. I grew up on them, but it still boggles my mind that they haven't seen some of the best movies ever made!
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Pete's Dragon
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Mary Poppins
The Sound of Music
The Wizard of Oz
Just to name a few..
And, a friend of mine has never seen Office Space, which is a great movie, if you ask me!
