Is it me or are the quantity and quality of the films available for streaming going downhill?!?

My son (22) and I were discussing which way we were going to go with the BIG CHANGE in September.  I told him streaming and he was VERY concerned about the quality and quantity of the streaming films.   And we argued back and forth for a while.  Your thoughts?

He pointed out the Kurosawa films that were available and then were dropped from streaming.

I made the argument that the Starz play rotate and provide variety.

Starz films (like HBO films) are cut for nudity and language, sometime excessive violence, in order to keep them "lite" PG, family friendly films.

A lot of the Kurosawa and other "good" movies were Criterion Collection. They have been disappearing from NF as their streaming agreements expire and since Hulu has exclusive rights to stream them for now NF will have only the DVDs.

Thanks for the info--very, very, very bad news for me and people like me.

Is Hulu going to be a better option  in the distant or no-too-distant future?

IMO the best is having 3 services.

1.NF for general streaming,   (7.99)

2. Blockbuster by mail with in store exchange  for blueray, games and new releases (9.99)

3. Hulu for streaming movies and TV shows. (7.99)

Gamefly is also an option for games.  We are on the 2 out unlimited at $22.95 per month and they have a great library of new and older games.  Their customer service is pretty good too.

Who knows about the future. Right now, for movies, they're not even close. Then again, I'm never unable to find something to watch on Netflix streaming. But as Aces says, it doesn't have to be a "one or the other" deal. Supplement Netflix streaming with Hulu. And then pepper in DVDs/PPV from other sources as well.

The public library has Criterion for me....and I get all the discs at the same time.  Rather than getting the movie and bonus materials separately!
The Starz stuff never seems to change for me.

I would caution a person against watching a movie they care about (like Kurosawa titles, should any Kurosawa ever show up there) via STARZ.

I can't speak to whether they edit for content but they definitely edit for aspect ratio.  You really don't wanna see stuff panned and scanned.

Yes on all counts to the title statement.  It's not you, Gus.

That said, I'm thinking that the best strategy is to alternate every month between streaming and DVDs ... in that way, more new movies will become available by streaming.

An interesting thought/strategy!
