Hi, I'd like to add some more titles that have this issue as of 2-17-09.

The Mission: Special Edition (1986)
Hell in the Pacific (1968)

'Hell in the Pacific' starts in widescreen for the titles, then seems to go to a 'less-wide screen' that I believe is cropped but still shows narrow letterboxing.

I'd like to add my frustrations to the thread. I'm amazed that this persists with everything else that works so well with the Roku device and WI in general. I especially hate that I might put five minutes into a film before it suddenly jumps down to fullscreen after the titles, and I have decide to start a new movie or watch it cropped. Last year I started watching some seafaring movie (forgotten now) that won an Oscar for cinematography. During the glorious title sequence I was told it was filmed in 'Superduperscope' or something like that. Now I'm excited. Then the titles end and I'm zoomed in on somebody's pores. No thanks!

As of 3-25-09: Man of the West (1958) It isn't available on DVD at all, but it's got widescreen titles, then pan-and-scan starts in the first scene.

Nate: I totally sympathize with you about all the full screen on IW. Just so you know; for older movies like this one it was common practice for the titles to be presented in widescreen before they switch over to full screen for the movie. The butchers who made the full screen version would otherwise have the problem of titles and credits being unreadable. So this kind of cheat is common practice when ful screen versions are made, unfortunately.

That's not Netflix's fault, however. They just take what version they have and encode it. I just wish they were more diligent about making sure they have tried to find the movie in its correct aspect ratio before settling for the full screen, but hopefully in time they will improve. Keep listing what you find in this thread!

Just sat down to watch my first instant watch title in a while, Falling Down (1993) and, lo and behold: it's pan and scan. I'll keep posting as I find them.

Oh, hey, Southland Tales (2008) is also pan and scan.

Krull

...and most of the Starz content.

Would rather Netflix not release 4:3 at all, unless original aspect.

Go to Netflix 'report a problem' of viewing activity and tell them you are completely unsatisfied with 4:3 movies.
