Watching instant movies - volume way too low. I cranked up the volume to max on both the movie volume slider and also on Windows. Can hardly hear the movies (multiple movies). Same problem on 2 different computers. One is a new laptop with all Windows Updates applied - running Vista. Other is a Dell desktop running XP-Pro with all Windows updates applied. I called Netflix and they had me purge the Silverlight - did not help on either PC. They said to update my PC. I told them that I have all updates current. They had no other suggestions. I'm on Time Warner RoadRunner's fastest service. Video quality is fine. Any ideas???

It's actually not likely a problem with your sound card, for anyone reading, not necessary to blow money on a new one..
Can NF add closed caption to all films ? Foreign films usually have this, but all films with LOW volume NEED access to CC .  It also adds extra info in scenes and validates the bad mumbling by actors and LOUD background noises.

From the Netflix website:

Find streaming TV shows & movies subtitled in your language

I see about 1500 titles showing as available with English language subtitles. I don't believe that any of these are true closed-captions.

From the FAQ:

The following devices support subtitles for streaming movies and TV shows:

  • PC/Mac
  • PS3
  • Wii
  • Google TV Devices such as Logitech Revue and Sony Internet TV
  • Boxee Box by D-Link
  • iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch

If subtitles are available for a movie or TV show, you will be able to enable them on any of the above devices. Note: not all movies and TV shows have subtitles. Movies in languages other than English have English subtitles "burned in" to the content. These subtitles will appear on all devices.

I have the same problem .... can't hear ANY NF movies ... have to buy an external speaker???  Good-bye Netflix!!

Try opening up your volume mixer, right click the sound icon in bottom right panel of your Windows screen, and Open Volume Mixer should be top of the list, click that.

In that menu, from left to right, your default speakers should be first; make sure that its volume is maxed. Now you should see volume controls for other open applications with sound settings listed on the right. You may have to scroll to the right with a scroll bar to see all of them. Make sure the control for your browser is maxed as well.

I've had this low sound problem with every movie application I've used, including Amazon Unbox and ITunes, so it doesn't seem leaving Netflix may free you of this problem.

Thanks ... volume is maxed out ... I just don't get it ... only 2 basic things to get right SIGHT & SOUND ... they just can't give us both... amazing

Do you really think the problem is Netflix's? I'm placing my bet on your system as the culprit. Then again, perhaps you're right, 26 million people subscribe but can't hear the audio.

No, I don't it's Netflix's problem, I think it is MY problem since I am the one who can't hear their movies .... interesting this is the first time I have ever had a sound problem with movies playing on my computer, but as you say, it's probably my system...

Speaking of Netflix, they certainly are not what they used to be from all the negative press they've been getting .... maybe it's because of the sound problem PLUS the poor customer service .... no need to respond Spindaddydad, sarcasm isn't helpful....you must work for them!

but as you say, it's probably my system...

Yet curiously, you blamed it on them

they certainly are not what they used to be from all the negative press they've been getting

yet you continue to subscribe

you must work for them!

Yes, you busted me.
