A Netflix Community

I won't join netflix as long as they advertise using popunders. In fact those anoying ads convinced me to go with the other online rental service. I can't figure out how the Netflix ads get through my popup blocker but I searched online and found a number of forums where others describe having the same problem. I wonder if it is really worth it to them. I would guess that more people are turned off by these adds than click on them and join netflix.

FireFox, AdBlock Plus, and NoScript. There. FTFY (Fixed That For Ya).
I would sympathize more if I had seen one of those pup-unders since I started using the above.

Which "the other" service? Greencine?

Maubs, I use Firefox and AdBlock Plus, and still -- very occasionally -- get the pop-ups and pop-unders (didn't know that's what they were called).

Still, trebr doesn't seem like a person who will care much that the Firefox-AdBlock combo will eliminate 90-100% of his problems in this area. He is enjoying himself too thoroughly starting threads like this one.

Fuckin' a.

I've never had a pop-up or under.

I think that was due to the XBox Live inclusion.

Possiby, but it would be silly, as far as I was always told it isn't the advertisers that decide how to present the ads. That is part of why it is different for various websites, some use pop-ups, some have them off to the side, some have where every so many pages it will be an ad and you can choose to skip this ad or let it finish, some you have to watch the ad etc... I could have faulty information but as far as I know the advertiser (in this case Netflix) pay a site to advertise them and that is all, the site then just makes sure that all their advertising clients have space somewhere somehow where anyone browsing the site will see it at some point. All they do is pay for space, kind of like commercials the TV station will decide exactly where the ad is placed the advertiser just knows what block of the day or by show maybe but I bet that is as specific as it gets.

Firefox+Adblock and make sure your pop-up blocker is on the highest setting you will probably never have another problem. Just remember that pop-up blocker on that setting will block even pop-ups you want you will have to temporarily allow them access or allow that site permanent pop-up access.

But those companies do choose where they place their ad dollars and so ultimately have the responsibility. In other words, if Netflix doesn't want a bad reputation for pop-unders they shouldn't be using ad companies which have pop-unders in their arsenal.

Hello.

Any and all of you BRAGGING about never having a POP-UNDER:

1. You haven't been to enough sites yet, or..
2. You do NOT have FLASH enabled.

The Net Flix POP-UNDER that MOST of us have decided to use as a reason for NOT having anything to do with Net Flix, is made possible by using FLASH. IT IS NOT A POP-UP. POP-UP type blockers DO NOT STOP FLASH, or at least not the ones that are built into ANY browser I have used, which are MOST of them... I like using all the different browsers out there.

THE ONLY WAY to STOP that damn annoying Net Flix POP-UNDER is to NEVER visit a site that uses FLASH POP-UNDERS for advertising, or keep the FLASH turned off. But, as soon as you DO turn off FLASH, you will start not seeing your FAVORITE web sites as you normally do. You MIGHT even start receiving errors or browser-crashes. And this is WHY FLASH-BASED POP-UNDERS are used. Net Flix KNOWS that most users need the FLASH left on.

DAMN Net Flix for taking advantage of our need of FLASH!... :)

We must not be using the term "pop-under" in the same way then, because to get a window under the browser, a "pop-under" window, you MUST trick the browser into allowing a separate window to open, regardless of the content that is eventually displayed IN a window (flash, gif, whatever).

Pop-up blockers prevent separate windows from being generated unless you specifically asked for it or allowed it to appear, and that DOES include pop-under windows.
