Netflix Movie Fans

When watching a video on the Instant Watch option, everything runs fine, both FF and IE, that is until i either hover on a tab or do something that causes a "bubble box" to appear over the video playback area. when this happens, in both FF and in IE, I get this strange compressed video box that is black and white with vertical lines in it. I took a screen shot which you can see here http://gunner.is-a-geek.net/pics/netflixproblem.jpg Has anyone else run into this problem or know what is causing it? I have the most recent versions of IE FF and Silverlight installed, AND this problem even happened after a FRESH install of vista, meaning total system wipe and hard format of the hard drive to remove all traces of previous installation.

Hey Aragon79 - welcome to Movie Fans. Check out the Instant Watch Help Group. Someone may have the answer already posted there. If you don't see it start a new discussion and copy your question over to that group. You'll have a better shot at getting help there than on the main board.

If no one answers your question there...

Whats happening is that the "bubble box" is being rendered by the operating system at a system level resolution which is not matching that which is used in the video you are watching.

Basically the bubble is standard definition resolution and the streamed video is HD resolution, likely 720i (the i is most likely whats causing the lines)

i = Interlacing which is the method used to play back footage on a television set (CRT). Two images are simultaneously shown per frame and are drawn in a comb method (the lines you see). As one image is being drawn the other is fading away waiting for the redraw cycle.

This is an outdated and "Poor" method in today's world of LCD's and Plasma screens because they do not use electron guns like a cathode ray tube, but its still a widely used industry standard. Whereas;

p= Progressive Scan and is simply one complete "Still" image after another displayed on your screen (like a flip book) that simulate motion...

Anyway, the low res bubble is interfering with the video and causing it to pop into a default view so that the bubble can be shown. Its probably some setting that Netflix needs to make in the config file to disable text bubbles. The best way to avoid it (for now) is to not move the cursor around the tabs (or simply disable the text bubbles).
