Saturday Receiving and Shipping?

Kind of weird. Netflix received a movie today (Saturday) and shipped the next available today. I think thats a first for me. Is this something new?

Yes and no. Netflix has been testing Saturday shipping (which means Monday delivery for most people) for a while and is rolling it out across the country. So it's probably new to your area, not to the country as a whole. Nice, huh?

Yes, very nice! Keeps the flow going better. Hopefully USPS doesn't cut a day in the middle of the week like they are talking.

One drawback to this, not that it's a big deal, is that those who anticipate Tuesday NR films by shipping back on Fridays will have to make sure they switch to Saturdays -- it closes the window up a bit, especially considering the earlier pickups on Saturday.

It's a later pick up for me. My mail person doesn't usually get to my house on Saturday until like 12 or 1 PM!

But the Prof is right about the narrowed time frame for the new release target.

Instead of dropping off at a post office any ol' time after last pickup Thursday night until midday pickup on Saturday, we now have to target the p.o. return time from after last pickup Friday to last midday pickup Saturday.

That also means, for home pickups, you can't leave it out Friday OR Saturday, but ONLY Saturday -- and hope that your carrier is "in the mood" to pick up on that one day.

Still worth it, but less convenient in some ways I am finding after months of Saturday service.

It looks like the Postal Service is on the verge of eliminating Saturday delivery altogether according to tonight's NBC news.

The proposal to cut mail delivery to five days would save millions, Potter told the Senate federal services subcommittee of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

But, he added, post offices would be kept open on Saturdays, since that is the only day many people are free to go to these facilities. Mail would still be delivered to post offices boxes on Saturdays, he said, and large customers could pick up mail at post offices.

Thinking about in terms of NF, it would seem to make it very hard to get a disk back on Monday for the new releases. Putting it in the mail on Friday would land it in at the post office on Saturday morning, and NF could pick it up in its trucks, resulting in a Saturday turn-around. But, other than taking the disk to the post office, it can't be put in the mail until Monday.

None of this may happen, of course, but the impact in terms of NF seemed interesting to me.

So, if I'm overweight, I can still pick up my mail at the post office on a Saturday if this goes into effect? Sorry, this just seemed like something that would show up on The Tonight Show when Jay Leno would do Headlines - had to chime in there.
