Netflix Movie Fans

No, the movie that I'm stealing the discussion title from probably doesn't qualify, but what are some of the MOST DEPRESSING movies you've ever seen.  Now, we don't mean ones that were disappointing and didn't live up to the hype.  We're also not talking about films that are simply 'dark', as many dark movies can actually be quite uplifting, even funny.

We mean movies that make you want to curl up into the fetal position and weep uncontrollably for a while.  Bleak, austere- the movies that suck joy and hope out of you like you were a Capri Sun pouch.

Some of my examples:

Requiem for a Dream

Solaris (the original, though there is a ray of hope in it)

Silent Running

Grave of the Fireflies is definitely one of the saddest in my opinion.

I find it bizarre that it was released as a double feature along with My Neighbor Totoro during its initial theatrical release in Japan.
I find it bizarre that it was released as a double feature along with My Neighbor Totoro during its initial theatrical release in Japan.

Not only that, it was random which of the two was played first, there were no instructions on that from the distributor. I can't imagine many people hanging around to watch Totoro after seeing Fireflies - but I can imagine the downer people experienced after having watched Totoro and then seeing Fireflies.
The first one that popped into my head was Nobody Knows. It's so bleak, depressing and horrifying, I couldn't think of any others, but I also agree with Grave of the Fireflies and The Human Condition Trilogy.
Come and See (Idi i smotri) 1985
Not sure I could call this the saddest movie in the world because the word sad doesn't really do the film justice. Words like disturbing, intense, un-relenting, horrifically tragic come to mind. One of the darkest and most brutal films I've ever experienced.
Documentaries:
Dear Zachary
Deliver Us From Evil

Films:
2046
The Grave of Fireflies
Jean de Florette / Manon of the Spring (and particularly the first segment)
