Priest   IMDb   2011   PG-13   87 min    was on Encore HD last night.

Equivalent to Pitch Black, but cost $60M so there won't be a sequel with a $15M opening weekend and a $78M total gross.  It's short, well made with just the right corny dialog and acting you'd expect from Paul Bettany, Karl Urban and Maggie Q.  Futuristic dying civilization run by the Church vs vampires!  Definitely needs a big 2 and a half hour follow up, but most likely never to be.  Nice CG and FX, attention to detail, set dressing.  Oh, well.

The Big Lift (1950)

3/5 Stars

Filmed documentary style in Berlin, the first 15 minutes or so of the film are a little too realistic with the roar of jet engines nearly making dialogue inaudible. Once Monty Clift and Paul Douglas begin their adventures in the city you have a well acted drama with a bit of anti-Soviet propaganda thrown in.

The Clash of the Titans remake--not very good at all, the original was much better, and not boring.

I've had to suffer through both Clash and Wrath (being married has it's difficulties).  Man, I wanted to vomit.

Les Bonnes Femmes (1960)

3/5 Stars

A well made film but rather pointless. All the male characters in the film are either jerks, perverted, nerds, or maniacs so what is a poor young Parisian woman to do? At least the women are lovely. A bit of nudity in the striptease scene and the swimming pool scene is revealing.

Why Does Herr R. Run Amok? (1970)

2/5 Stars

Extremely low budget film looks like it was shot by a TV news cameraman. The improvised performances reminded me of Cassavettes' films. I can certainly understand what made Herr R. want to run amok and that this is meant as a critique of the German middle class at the time but choosing this story (it's based on actual events) to make his point leaves one with a sense of futility and pessimism.

The Cape Canaveral Monsters (1960)

2/5 Stars

Written by teenagers for teenagers. At least that's how it seemed. Almost on par with the works of Ed Wood. A bit of kinkiness involved as the female alien is clearly eager to undress her female captives to prepare them for transport to their planet.

Oppai Chanbara (2008)

3/5 Stars

Obviously no-one will watch this for the story but it does a fairly decent plot. The bare breasts are on the screen long enough to arouse your interest but not long enough to warrant adding this to your collection of erotic videos (if you have one). There's one sex scene that's not hardcore but (thankfully) keeps Miss Anoa's breasts in full view.

Slogging through The World at War. On the Barbarossa (episode 5) now. The biggest boon in the series are the firsthand accounts of Allied and, especially, Axis power player testimonials. Their dry, matter-of-fact recounting of strategies and maneuvers really pivot the war footage to great effect.

The Stalingrad episode is my favorite of the bunch.

Watching it now, though 'Desert' (about the North African campaign pre-Patton) was impressive.

Captain Courageous--I enjoyed this sea adventure yarn about a rich lad who falls off his cruise ship & rescued from the sea and taught life lessons.  Early Spencer Tracey performance and Lionel Barrymore too.  The child actor was pretty good too.  From Rudyard Kipling.
