What shocking movie have you rented just because Netflix carries it, and you wanted to be able to say you've seen it, not because you would have chosen it for other reasons? (Shocking like Cannibal Holocaust or Salo)
I'll admit I will probably never rent either of those two, but I did see Audition and Oldboy just because I wanted to see what everyone was talking about. (And truthfully, watched both with my hands covering my eyes!)
I watched "I Spit On Your Grave" because for years I've always heard how it is a seminal horror (as in horrific, not horrifying) movie, with the worst rape scene ever, and if you are a fan of the genre you've got to have watched this film. After I watched this, I felt let down. I've seen worse rape scenes in foreign movies (like Baise-Moi), and it had some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Had Netflix not carried it, I would have never sought it out.
Yeah it was awful. It was probably shocking in its time but now is tame and just bad all around. I rented Baise Moi for its "shocking" content and that was terrible too.
The rape scene in Irreversible was one of the most shocking I'd seen in awhile. I guess this would fall into the category of watching a movie just because someone told me that it was disturbing. Well, except for that one (very long) rape, it wasn't too shocking.
I saw Audition and am still disturbed by it. I saw Salo & can't quite figure that movie out...was it supposed to be shocking, ironic, what. All I know is that poop is Gross, no matter how you slice it. Saw Caligula, whatever, soft core porn, Holy Mountain had some cool images in it. Sweet Movie, freaky. I check stuff out to see what the hype is all about. I don't really have anybody in my life that would be interested in what movies I've seen, which is pretty sad.
Next on my list in my NF queue is one I just heard about today, but apparently has been out for years. it has terrible reviews, but I can't resist checking it out.
