Why did Netflix suddenly remove a TV show from Instant without warning?

In the past, they always have given an expiry date. A week or two ago, the Dick Van Dyke Show was suddenly yanked off of instant without any warning whatsoever. I was livid.

 

My mother has dementia (she lives with us) and is no longer is interested in most things, which is heartbreaking, but she was loving that show. Believe it or not, it was actually helping her concentration. She has trouble communicating and her memory is very limited. She never watched the show when it was on, but she laughed and laughed and laughed as we watched 2 or 3 episodes every evening together, and she would try to talk about each episode with me afterward. It was very touching.

 

I guess it's for this reason that I sort of am taking their yanking the show off on a very personal level. I mean, these are the last days I will have with my mother. It is a shame that the one thing that was bringing joy to her, is now gone.

 

Has anyone noticed any other shows being removed from Instant without any warning?

There are many reasons and they are all legitimate ones. You should call customer service and see if they have a reason for a particular show being removed.

All legitimate, huh? I find that hard to believe.

 

Why should I have to be the one to call them? Why can't they warn their own customers which ones are coming off? Why can't they automate their systems and notify users who were in the process of watching things? Why can't they allow us to email them with a question?

 If your question is important enough, you'll call them. Otherwise you'll get it answered in a random forum somewhere. If it's too easy to ask a question, the questions get stupid in a hurry.

Besides, if Netflix wants to keep customers (their track record isn't so great) then they need to make some adjustments, this is included.

There is a discussion over at Hacking Netflix about titles disappearing from instant watch because of server problems. Usually they see a block of titles disappear. Some have been reported to return in a couple of days.

I would love it if it comes back! I'll cross my fingers.

Here's a couple of options :

Hulu.com -- All 5 seasons are available on Hulu and don't expire until 2037.  The shows are free to watch on your PC or you can watch them on a Roku if you subscribe to Hulu Plus for 7.99 a month.

 

Amazon Prime - If you have Amazon Prime all 5 seasons of The Dick Van Dyke show are available but, I don't see any expiration information on there.  Amazon Prime is $79 per year to get free 2 day shipping on  Amazon purchases and includes free streaming movies and TV shows.  You can watch on a PC or Roku.

 

It sucks when NF pulls a tv show I'm watching.  They usually post that the show will expire 1 week before it is removed but on a tv show with multiple seasons 1 week isn't very long and you can miss the notice completely. Instantwatcher.com shows expiration dates on NF shows so you can check there.  I usually look at theexpiring soon sort on Instantwatcher every week.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. What would normally be a slight inconvenience is more than that in your case. However, I have no help or advice to offer about why Netflix yanked the show. But since it's so important to you and your mother, I suggest you order the series from Amazon and put control of the show firmly in your hands.
