What intrigues me the most about my two favorite 70's thrillers is how meandering they are. Plot takes a backseat and the movies become more of an excuse to examine 70's culture from the outsider…Continue

Dustin Hoffman's greatest performance, hands down. This flick is insanely underrated. Theresa Russell is hot here and my main man HDS chews up the scenery as usual. One of my favorites!

Comment by Ando on March 30, 2013 at 6:57am More fun than it initially seems: this is IMDB's top 70 films of the 70s (a trailer-fest).

First thing I did when I got my first 5.1 system was go right to the helo beach assault scene and crank it up. Fukin rockets and helos coming from behind me! The whoosh and wump-wump-wump as if they were actually going past my ears and over my head. Damn, that was sensational.
Comment by Pihk on June 26, 2012 at 10:08am Coppola's film is all about a man going insane due to an onslaught of whooshing helicopter blades. 7.1 channels worth!
No one claims it's anything more than a fantasy, Sev.
I mean, really - his wine sucks, too.
If the last cans of film of Apocalypse Now -- with or without Redux -- were on fire, I wouldn't piss on them to put them out.
That movie is a lie from start to finish. It degrades its subject and its original Conrad-ian inspiration. It belongs in that group of similar offenses to Mankind that includes Forrest Gump and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
Fuck them all. Deeply, de-e-eply up the ass.
I like them both and I wish Redux had a further up the river scene with some Japanese ruins, completing the "going backwards in time" motif from the Conrad novel - as it would relate to the history of American involvement in Vietnam, anyway.
Comment by Ando on June 25, 2012 at 5:52pm Both Apocalypse Now & Apocalypse Now Redux (1979) are currently streaming. Both have identical star ratings (whatever they mean) but I prefer the shorter theatrical release; primarily for the absence of the very long French plantation scene, which slows the momentum.
