First thing I did when I got my first 5.1 system was go right to the helo beach assault scene and crank it up. Fukin rockets and helos coming from behind me! The whoosh and wump-wump-wump as if they were actually going past my ears and over my head. Damn, that was sensational.

If the last cans of film of Apocalypse Now -- with or without Redux -- were on fire, I wouldn't piss on them to put them out.
That movie is a lie from start to finish. It degrades its subject and its original Conrad-ian inspiration. It belongs in that group of similar offenses to Mankind that includes Forrest Gump and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
Fuck them all. Deeply, de-e-eply up the ass.

I like them both and I wish Redux had a further up the river scene with some Japanese ruins, completing the "going backwards in time" motif from the Conrad novel - as it would relate to the history of American involvement in Vietnam, anyway.

Both Apocalypse Now & Apocalypse Now Redux (1979) are currently streaming. Both have identical star ratings (whatever they mean) but I prefer the shorter theatrical release; primarily for the absence of the very long French plantation scene, which slows the momentum.
