While I was never into Dragonball, I'm looking forward to seeing the new U.S. live action just to see what Hollywood cash looks like adaptation-wise.
Click here to see pics of what the characters look like in the new movie. Goku's hair doesn't look all that hideous, but more importantly, they dropped Roshi's shell.
Live action anime adaptations are something I've just started taking an interest in. Checked out your list. I've got about 8 or 9 of them in my Q that I just sorta stumbled across. More of them looked interesting, though, so I'll have to add them as I get room. My Q has already reached maximum density. booo. I'm curious...if you could only watch 2 from your list, what would your favorites be?
I'm watching the Death Note live action that I found elsewhere right now. At first I thought the acting sucked, but it has really grown on me through this first one. Love Ken'ichi Matsuyama's portrayal of L. The mannerisms are spot on. The shinigami look kickass, too. And since it's subtitled I get Shidou Nakamura as the voice of Ryuuk. sweeeet. There's also a prequel L: Change the WorLd that I want to see. Think it just came out in Japan in Feb. On this page you can find info/links for all 3 Death Note movies:http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=6383
Also, I have to agree it will be very interesting to see what Hollywood does to Dragonball.
DEATH NOTE is actually playing theatrically next week, but I think I'll just wait for the domestic dvd. I found a rental store near D.C. that specializes in imports. when I rented DN, the subtitles were in Engrish.... and unreadable, so i just turned it off....the same with teh second NANA.
As for the two I would suggest, I guess that would depend on what genre you like best: comedy, drama, action, sci-fi, or horror.
Okay, cool. In that case, assuming you've already seen teh horror-themed RINGU and BATTLE ROYALE, I'd suggest TOMIE and BAPTISM OF BLOOD. If you just want some insane splatter, RIKI OH, will more than serve your needs.
Actually, looking back over that list, I'm surprised at how much of it is horror.
Being that we're all anime fans here, I'd strongly suggest the comedy CROMARTIE HIGH. It plays better to those that dig anime and might get all the old-school anime references. I've never even seen the anime or read the manga it's based on, but I laughed my ass off.
I mentioned this in the Foriegn Films list a month or two back, I rewatched RINGU after reading the book and it didnt' hold up (fyi - Riugy, the ex-husband, has a small role in SPEED RACER).
Let me know what you think of TOMIE. I rented in blindly, purchased it right afterwards, and then picked up the rest of the series. The first film has some wonderfully creepy atmosphere and subtlely surreal imagry. I liked it a great deal because it felt like so many of my favorite lowbudget U.S. horror titles from the 80's, like BASKET CASE or BEYOND THE DOOR.
I have all the first and second generation of Troma discs. The TIT test is brilliant!
I'm actually in ZOMBIEGEDDON, for all of a second. The director, a friend of mine, had this ellaborate gag worked out, but he didnt' supervise any of the edits. The third or fourth, and final, editor cut me down to a zombie bursting through a door about to munch down on Brinke Stevens.
There's a Cromartie live action? How did I not know that?
Obviously, young lady, you did not view my list carefully enough.....*in best teacher voice* next time, pay attention. ;)
Jokes aside, I had a ball with it. To me, it seemed like it would play better for fans of older anime. At one point, my favorite part in the movie, they lift a sequence straight from Urusei Yatsura, an anime circa 1980. While a comedy classic, I don't think many younger anime fans are familiar with Yatsura (aka Those Obnoctious Aliens), Lum, or even Matthew Sweet's famous Lum tatoo (for the younger crowd, think Ming Tea from Austin Powers).....
