You forgot that the monsters in Gantz are completely stupid, unless you are on acid, and that it is complete a waste of time. I put off watching if years because of all the bad reviews from others until I finally broke down and bought it. Big mistake. I still haven't seen Speek Grapher, its been in my queue forever.

I was watching the Glass Mask series on http://www.crunchyroll.com/, but the last available episode was 35. Does anyone know where I might find the rest?

Oh, but wait. Now they have up to 39, so I think they are working on it. I was addicted to it and was very sad when the didn't have any more, but now I'm super happy that I can watch a few more episodes.

You like crunchyroll do ya? Me too. Check out Time of Eve (Eve no Jikan) at crunchyroll. If you like that check out Pale Cacoon by the same director Yasuhiro Yoshiura(I love that name).

Necropost!

So I hopped on the way-back machine and re-watched the anime film that originally hooked me on anime, and it's worth a mention I think.

"Robot Carnival"

It's a collection of short films all themed about ( ... wait for it ... ) robots, and is more than a little reminiscent of Disney's Fantasia (the 1940 version).
(That's as much a warning as a comparison; if "Fantasia" isn't your cup-o'-tea, chances are "Robot Carnival" won't be either)

Like "Fantasia," "Robot Carnvial" was an experiment in pushing the art. Many of the stories are animated at a full 24FPS -- no in-betweens. All done by hand. The artwork is still amazing, but considering when it was done, it's a marvel. There's precious little dialog in the entire collection, with most of the mood set by music -- which wanders across several genres.

There was never a Region 1 DVD release, so you're not going to find a legit copy. It's worth finding the Streamline dubbed version because the "A Tale of Two Robots -- Chapter 3: Foreign Invasion" has a some jokes inserted that aren't part of the original Japanese script (some subtle, some not so much). It also features the voice of Lisa Michelson, who was the original Satsuki and Kiki for me.

So I looked up this Robot Carnival and found it on dvd advertised as a limited edition R1 dvd for seventy dollars on Amazon. When I searched the the first thing that came up was a more recent movie called Memories. I've been meaning to check that title out for a while, but am now very interested in getting this Robot Carnival, so I just bought the VHS tape. I wonder if my VCR still works?

I have the VHS copy myself.. In fact, my friend made the transfer from my tape to DVD for me. If you have a LD player (which, this last Friday, Pioneer officially quit making), and you can find the laser disc copy, go that route -- it's the better version (Streamline dub but the beginning and ending sequences are kept original)

As far as the limited edition R1 DVD -- that's quite a find if it's legit. I saw the disc on Amazon too, but as far as I know, an R1 DVD was never made so the bootleg klaxon went off. I know there was an R2 version that included the Streamline dub as an alternate language track. I wonder if the dealer just accidentally ripped and re-burned it?

Speaking of the R2 Robot Carnival DVD. If going the torrent route doesn't bother you, there seems to be a good number of seeded transfers -- and if you look hard you'll find the R2 DVD with anglicized menus.

I've never seen Memories, but you're right -- it looks interesting.
