Best Movies of 2008

The year isn't over but I am amazed at the number of new movies watched and rated by members. The number of truly outstanding movies is usually limited. Which one(s) qualify as potentially the best of 2008?

What will 2009 have in store for us movie lovers? Can't wait to find out! 2008 was rather dry for me as Opinionated Gal said...though I rated Iron Man, Wall-E, and The Dark Knight quite high 4 to 5 stars.

Wall-E.
Beautiful animation. Lovable characters. Great music (it's Hello, Dolly! for God's sake). Pure Bliss.
Made me love my existence because I was given the chance to see it.
Adorable is an understatement.

Keep in mind I *only* watch DVDs -- no theaters for me, thanks ... so I went through my rentals and ratings. They are way loaded with wonderful 2007 choices, but there's only one 2008 movie I've seen that I would nominate as best of the year:

In Bruges

The best movie I have seen in 2008 is upbeat, happy, excellent choreography, humorous, an entertaining story line and it's fun to watch. Seeing Pierce Brosnan dancing in one of the silliest disco costumes ever seen (be sure to watch the trailer) is worth the price of admission. Here is my review of "Momma Mia!" starring Meryl Streep.

Movie lovers who like romantic comedies and rock and roll music will probably like "Mamma Mia."

The music of Abba is infectious and the performance of Meryl Streep is, once again, worth an oscar. She has fun with the role and delivers an entertaining performance that displays a range that even fans of Meryl Streep will find engaging.

The story line is simplistic. A young woman is getting married and invites her probable father(s) to the wedding--all three of whom could have been her father. The story is not worthy of Shakespeare but the musical soundtrack makes the movie worthwhile. When I saw the show a group of young girls were dancing and clapping to the movie and crying during some of the scenes.

Amanda Seyfried, playing the role of the young bride, is an excellent singer and actress. The weakest link is the singing ability of Pierce Brosnan. As James Bond, he is second to none. As a singer, he leaves a lot to be desired. He pulls it off but leaves one with the sense that he was uncomfortable and knows that his ability to sing is questionable--despite his ability as an accomplished actor.

All in all, the movie was a pleasant surprise--much more entertaining than I expected and a lot of fun to watch.
