What are you reading now? 17 Replies

I recall thumbing through Sidney Lumet's "Making Movies" in a bookstore. I finally picked it up this morning. It's reportedly one of the better director-penned books. Has anyone here read it?

The history of Movies 101 - where to begin? 13 Replies

I've been wanting to read about movies for a while, not just watch them. But where do I start?I'm not really interested in actors (biographies/gossip) or movie reviews, but more some good suggestions…Continue

Nice Books Into Movies channel.

Knaldskalle--you are correct, the way the Wall goes in the opposite direction that what the normal thread discussions appears threw me off kilter, plus there wasn't a place where someone could comment on someone else comments.   At any rate, the main idea was just a thread devoted to print media on movies.  I'm more of a follower than a leader anyway, so if a thread pops up, ie. the above, history of Movies 101,  I might just roll with it.

I think David's referring to how comments on "the wall" of this group go in the opposite direction of what discussion threads do.

Great idea for a group, btw! I've been wanting to get into movie literature for a while and I have no idea where to start.

David- re Eberts Your Movie Sucks book: I have it, and I regret paying for it.  I mean, like I said, he doesn't explain why he chose those particular films  (or his particular reviews) as to why those movies sucked.  I'll mail you my copy, if you want.  You shouldn't spend any money on it, that's for sure.

For whatever reason, probably due to my lack of computer skills, this whole thread looks different that the rest of NF Community. Bizarre. I'll soldier on I guess...

What do you mean?  Describe it to me and may be I  (or someone here) can help.

Currently I'm reading a book by Peter Bogdanovich titled, Who The Hell's In It--Conversations with Hollywood's Legendary Actors.  I am in the middle of reading about Cary Grant.  Sometimes he'll just talk in a generalized terms about the actor ie. Cary Grant, and other times, he'll also ask them question in an interview style.  So far so good.  It's worth a look if you enjoy that sort of thing.  Some of the actors:  Jerry Lewis, Bogart, James Stewart, John Wayne, John Cassavetes, Chaplin, and so forth.

ET--I'd seen that book or perused some of Ebert's review from it.  I thought it was a novel approach, and thought if I can run across a copy of it pretty cheap, I might pick it up.   That said though, there are tons of movies that suck.  Mostly people want advice on what movie to rent or watch, so it has a certain audience I guess.

I have a bunch of them.

First, I'll share about Ebert's "Your Movie Sucks" or whatever.  This is a bunch of reviews of movies he obviously didn't like, but he gives no cognizant arguments as to why those movies suck.  I had my opinion of Ebert dropped a fer piece and should have demanded a refund.  Piece of crap, it was.

I was wondering if anyone has any books on movies, actors or directors that they have enjoyed?  I've got books by Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video guide, as well as books by Roger Ebert, which is a book of his reviews.

I also have a nice horror, history, and poster book by Ronald V. Borst, Graven Images, that's sort of a coffee table book, that if you're in the genre is worth picking up.  It can be found on Amazon if interested.  I'll add a few others as time allows.  I don't know if a thread like this exist already, but though if not, might be a good topic.
