My first viewing of Ivan The Terrible. It'll undoubtedly take the weekend to get through Parts 1 & 2 but I'm finally in the proper spirit.

The weekend? No. Together both parts make up a little over three hours.

It starts great and some of the visual shit is really spectacular.

In the Agfacolor sequence I love the way Mikhail Kuznetsov ever-so-slightly purses his lips as he sings with the mask in his hand.

The weekend. Took me all week to get through Costner (& Co.'s) Hatfields & McCoys. The Eisenstein film looks slightly less deleterious - but not much.

Some 5 or 6 years ago I tried to get through Lola Montès - it was really tough going. As some kind soul uploaded a decent version I'm trying again today.

Psyched. Just found a nice surprise. Love the second half of Branded To Kill, but the rice sniffing exploits of the hired gun during the first half are infuriatingly bizarre. When the hunt for Killer Number One gets serious the film engrosses.

Harakiri   IMDb   1962   NR   133 min   BD   Criterion 2005

Considered the finest "anti-samurai" film ever made, this film turns the standard samurai slasher films of the time (and even today) on their head, providing a personal experience of the long standard Ronin character.  Much like what Clint Eastwood did to the Western with "Unforgiven"; novelist Yasuhiko Takiguchi, screenwriter Shinobu Hashimoto and director Masaki Kobayashi tell a compelling story of the lives of the once proud (and employed) Samurai now down on their luck after the unification of the warring kingdoms of early 17th century Japan.

This Blu Ray disc contains a picture perfect 2.35 ratio B&W copy of the film.  In Japanese with ENG subs.  All the better to display the gorgeous cinematography, amazing locations and sets.  Extras are a little sparse.  10/10

Pickup on South Street (1953) Sam Fuller's in the air. I ran into a good version of Pickup last night but I had to bookmark it (the remaining 23 eps of The World at War becon). Having never seen Pickup it'll be my first Criterion after the war.

Now, if I were to pick my top five CC titles, The Seventh Seal would rank 5, just below Andrei Rublev, Grand Illusion, The Seven Samurai and Do The Right Thing. Anytime I run into any one of these streaming I stop everything to watch. Looking at an excellent version of Bergman's film now.

Lessee . . . The Seventh Seal, Andrei Rublev, Grand Illusion, Seven Samurai, and Do the Right Thing . . .

One of those just seems to stick out like a glop of shit on an ice cream sundae. Pray tell . . . which do you think it might be?

All cherries to me.

I think you may be suffering from et-itis.

(However, I'm up to Part 8 of The Idiot  and my dick is still hard.)

If we're on the same (last) page, then we agree Ando must have a serious problem.
