Why We Love Bad Boys!

You know the ones I'm talking about. The man that your mom warned you about. The boy that might make your dad look for his shotgun. The guy your sister, who is far more sensible than you, is afraid of. The dude your brother tried to beat up, but instead got his ass kicked by.

It's not just because they're hot. There's something else that makes them special. It's not just because they're dangerous either. We generally don't like being scared. It's because we admire a man who bucks the system and is confident enough to say whatever he thinks, no matter who is listening. Most of the time, we just don't have the guts to do or say the things he does. It's why we idolize him. He's our Champion.

Who are your favorite bad boys? What is it they've said or done that sets them apart from everyone else? Why is he universally hated or loved? I'm not just looking for lists here. What I'd like to see folks do is pick one and explain what it is about them that makes them special. If there's several that you just adore, post one now and another the next day and so on. I have a huge list of them myself, so I'll be adding to our thread if things slow down.

RHETT BUTLER

My mom and I are both die-hard GWTW afficianados. The one thing I never understood was her and Scarlett's obsession with Ashley Wilkes. Yes, he is the quintessential southern gentleman and the perfect husband. That just made me want to roll my eyes. He went to war without question whether he agreed with it or not. He kept his desire for Scarlett as secret as he possibly could. He let himself be swept up in the changes to his way of life without so much as a "No thank you".

I think that's why Ashley always bored me to tears.

Rhett was different. He wanted nothing to do with marriage or war. He knew the south would lose and refused to make a single sacrifice for it. Instead he wheeled and dealed and made his fortune off the people he thought were stupid enough to be fighting each other. He made himself stand out and absolutely relished in the changes to his world when the South fell.

I've never viewed GWTW as a romance, by the way. To me it is a classic anti-war story. I think this is why I've always loved Rhett Butler so much. He and Scarlett weren't the only ones that saw the futility of the war. Ashley and Melanie saw it, too. They, however, knew their place and did what they were "supposed to". Butler on the other hand, savored every moment that he prospered without sacrifice, knowing beyond a doubt that he was the smartest one of them all.; ▶ Reply to This
