Finally, a fine streaming version of Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street (1945). YT versions all suck. Even the Netflix streamer is C grade. Drop it while it's hot.

Thanks, Prof. I've never really enjoyed The Third Man (can barely sit through its baroque abstractions) and have long felt it to be inferior to Odd Man Out, a masterpiece, in my eyes. Could be (as Clute & Edwards allude to in the podcast) my conditioned American sensibility.

How bout The Third Man (1949)? Can I call it noir? imdb does, though this Carol Reed classic really transcends the categorization...

In response to beeswax on Alain Silver's commentary track for Thieves' Highway, it's been a while, but I remember liking that commentary track. My preference is for commentary tracks that focus on issues like how shots were set up, editing, and lighting, and I tend to dislike commentary tracks that focus a lot on actors' biographies or studio politics. Perhaps I prefer that style of commentary because I was never trained in photography or filmmaking and so I find a focus on shots, lighting, costume choices, etc. more educational (i.e., interesting to me) than some other perpectives. But that's just my preference. I'm new here, so I hope I'm following protocol properly. And I did like Thieves Highway as a noir film . . . but I'll watch even the worst of the worst (e.g., Swampfire), so long as it's noir from the classic era according to someone's classification system.

just saw "kiss me deadly" for the first time. crazy, man. some of the most eccentric female performances i've ever seen in one movie. and what the heck do you think was in that box? the same thing in the trunk of j. frank parnell's car? or what was in marcellus wallace's suitcase?

I just listened to Alain Silver's commentary track for Thieves' Highway, and I'm interested to hear what anybody else thought about it. Occasionally offers some good insights -- I especially liked it when he spoke about the film in relationship to the novel -- but he spent an awful lot of time just offering a play-by-play of shot set-ups. I found it lackluster.

It's a stunning film; I encourage anyone who hasn't to see it.

I'd like to know where NF gets off calling it "Jules Dassin's last completed film" in the At a Glance, though.
