Since you like horror, I have a few faves for you: The Cry, Three Extremes, the original Shutter and the original versions of The Grudge, The Eye, Ringu, One Missed Call, and The Strangers (original movie is called Them). I could go on with original Asian horror movies that have been remade by hollywood, but I'll let you start there.
In other genres, Seven Samurai, Run Lola Run, Rififi, Volver, & Tsotsi are some of my favorites.
Check them out & let me know what you think.

Also, check out the discussion about your favorite foreign film. There are a lot of suggestions from people who are very passionate about foreign films. I know you'll see some good titles there.

I'm not familiar with THE CRY, so thanks for hte heads up. I need to check it out.

As for THEM, THE STANGERS isn't a remake, but they're damn similar.

Fanny and Alexander is one that should not be missed. There are two versions, one being the theatrical release lasting only 188 minutes. I would recommend the version released for TV, which was a wonderful 312 minutes in length.

The original of Robin William's "The Birdcage" is another that I have enjoyed. It is called "La Cage Aux Folles", and is far superior to the later version.

And nobody should miss the classic "Beauty and the Beast" directed by Jean Cocteau. Not my favorite version of the classic fairy tale, but certainly worth the watch if you are interested in that genre.

For current films, I highly recommend The Lives of Others and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
There are loads of classic foreign films I could recommend but for now I'll just mention Kurosawa's Rashomon; a true masterpiece!

These aren't horror, but I think you might like the suspense:

The Page Turner
Criminal Lovers
Touchez pas au grisbi
Read My Lips
Comedy of Innocence (a very poorly translated title due to a false cognate)
A Man Escaped
Who Killed Bambi?
Caché
The Memory of a Killer
Elevator to the Gallows

You absolutely must watch "Old Boy." It is not a horror flick but it is very twisted. This was one of the first foreign films I watched and it is still a favorite. In my opinion I think this film goes where Hollywood won't. It has english dubbing (not so great) but I recommend subtitles! Enjoy!!

My favorites that I've seen this year would include
  • Reprise - Norwegian - very sharp
  • You, The Living - Swedish - very unusual and funny
  • The Year My Parents Went On Vacation - Brazilian - brilliant cinematography
  • Brick Lane - British - took me by surprise
  • Priceless - French - fairly mainstream but well done
