Fellow lovers of foreign films, let's talk about the movies we've seen recently and what we thought of them. There are forums in this group for favorite foreign films and for specific films but nothing for what we're watching now so let's get it started.
What's the last foreign film you saw?The Machine Girl, a hoot of a Japanese revengeploitation flick that takes blood splatter to "a whole 'nother level". Most of the film is watched through the blood-stained lens of the movie camera. I haven't laughed so hard at a movie in a long time. Not for everyone, but its a lot of fun.
What's next? Nuit et Brouillard, a Holocaust documentary recommended by Robert R.
A letter from an unknown woman. 3 stars
Based on a beautiful short story by Stefan Zweig, this movie was adopted from Vienna to China against the backdrop of the revolution. The movie is pretty true to the story, and I felt that Zweig's beautiful writing shines through. I do think there is something disturbing about that level of obsessive love. What a waste of a life. I liked the movie being adapated to the China in that time in history. The cinematography is wonderful.
I recently saw Last Year at Marienbad. It was interesting and subversive for its time. It's style was hijacked by those Calvin Klein Obsession ads where some moody person looks into the camera and says something confessional about an elusive woman who is the object of their "obsession." Actually, I preferred Bunuel's treatment of the topic in That Obscure Object of My Desire, a masterpiece imho.
The last foreign film I watched was A Very Long Engagement on instant watch the other night. It felt, as stated in the title, very long at times, but it was quite charming. As with the other European films I've seen, there are a lot of characters and subplots, which can be a little difficult to keep up with. My sister wants to watch it again now that we've learned who's who and can enjoy the story better.
