I'm new to Korean movies, and I'm looking for some recommendations - what have you seen that you liked? Are there any directors to be on the lookout for?
My Left Eye Sees Ghosts is hilarious and also Chinese (Hong Kong). Sammi Cheng is great in the lead. If you liked The Quiet Family then you should enjoy the remake, Takashi Miike's musical horror comedy The Happiness of The Katakuris.

Oh yes, I've seen that one, and I loved it - I've seen all the Sammi Cheng comedies available on Netflix. Thanks for the tip on the Katakuris, I really enjoyed The Quiet family - so I"m definitely going to see that one!

No that's actually a picture from the early twentieth century of a cobbler's shop in Reykjavik. The house was built in 1891, and just barely escaped being torn down this year. The lady in the door is wearing the Icelandic high fashion of the time - peysuföt- i.e. "sweater clothes" - don´t ask me how they came up with that name .. an example of Icelandic logic I guess! :-)
My introduction to KOREAN cinema was first through the action genre. SHIRI blew me a way, and it was soon followed up THE TUBE. Unlike Japanese cinema, Korean action films feel very American, even when they display an obvious anti-American sentiment. Since South Korea is so small, they make their films as culturally accessible as they can in hopes of international sales.
then, of course, you the VENGEANCE trilogy which negates my whole theory....
I have yet to see all of these, B-Independent. I heard a lot about them all, except for The Tube. Did you like that as well? I have been meaning to watch it, since I liked Kwon Oh-jung so much in the drama, Grand Chef...
I just watched "Sex is Zero" for the second time, first time 6 months ago. This movie is laugh-out-loud funny and is offset by an appealing and sobering love story - if you don't mind some nudity and a little gross-out humor.
It's been at least a year since I've seen it, but I remember it being enjoyable. Unfortunately, I don't get to rewatch movies as often as I would like .
I have just discovered this group, Asta - and I am so glad to join...
I have seen everything I could find with Kim Rae-won.
Yesterday I saw My Mother the Mermaid.. It is a superb film on so many levels. Unfortunately, NF does not have it. I wish they would bring it, it is so good. It is about a young woman who is transported into the past, and is witnessing the budding romance between her own parents. It is a beautiful love story, made strong by a superb cast. Jeon Do-yeon plays a dual role of the daughter, and the young mother superbly; The handsome and talented Park Hae-il plays the father in his youth, and Ko Du-shim gives a commending performance as the middle ages mom. The transition between the time zones were done seamlessly. Beautiful cinematography and masterful directing by Park Heung-Sik.
