I'm a pretty big fan. He's in my list of top 5 all-time favorite directors. But, he's unpopular with some folks. He seems to be missing from a lot of reputable "top 100 director" lists, and I never really understood that. Part of it is that he doesn't have a distinct style that carries from film to film, whereas a lot of other directors do.
Let's talk Louis Malle.
My favorites:
-The Fire Within (actually, my favorite movie ever)
-Au Revoir les Enfants
-Murmur of the Heart
-Pretty Baby
-God's Country
And Elevator to the Gallows is just barely on the outside of that list.
The only one on that list that I have seen is Murmur of the Heart. I gave it 4 stars, so I must have liked it! I guess I don't pay much attention to directors. The story's the thing for me.
One of my favorites is Atlantic City, which I think is one of Burt Lancaster's finest performances, and also notable for rescuing Susan Sarandon's career from relative obscurity. It's a small film, but pretty terrific.
I'm astounded that there are "reputable" lists of top 100 directors that omit Malle. If there are 100 directors better than Malle, I'll eat my DVD player. Atlantic City alone would make Malle one of my favorite directors.
