Netflix Movie Fans

Recently purchased a recently released wifi capable Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray player, which has wifi and Netflix. I thought this would make our Roku redundant. But so far, Netflix playback is terrible. I have the latest firmware and my network and internet connections are very fast. And playback on the Roku always was and still is nearly flawless. The Sony will buffer and load endlessly and I'll switch to the same movie on the Roku and it will play fine. They are sitting right next to one another.

Anyone else with similar? Suggestions? There aren't many configuration options on the Sony to even try. Hard to believe it's so bad as to be nearly unusable, it's not rocket science and Sony should have this down by now.

Roku XD streaming player costs $80 and supports full HD plus more streaming services than you can shake a stick at, it is very very small, and the remote is also small and simple.  Sony is not going to fix the problem.  My bdps570 has been moved into strictly disk playing.  It is last Sony brand device I will ever own.

All i have a Sony BDP-BX57 i purchased at sam's club february 2011. i have experienced slow choppyness from day 1. First i thought is was my old linksys wireless g router so i figured it was 5 years old so i upgraded to the latest greatest a linksys e3000 which supports wireless n. $200 spent and no improvement.

finally today i broke down and called sony after months of lurking in forums. i actually had good clear speaking tech named claudia help me. Now i am an IT Manager and was a Network Engineer for years so i am well versed in knowing how a network should be optimized. She had me change from dhcp to a manual address and from using my providers dns to using primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4 just raw public dns. I am now playing lord of the rings streaming for the first time since february without a single hiccup so far. I understand how dns can make a difference as for the static ip i am not convinced but she did say there was  a know issue with my device and netflix which this is how they are now adreessing the issue. i hope this will not be short lived but an epic like lord of the rings with a lot of panning and not one hiccup an hour in, i am happier than i have been since owning this thing. I hope this helps some of you out there as well but looking good to me

I hope your problem is fixed.  I had exactly the same change suggested to me months ago.  I even switched from wireless to a wired connection.  For some unknown reason, whenever I make some kind of significant change, it works better for a little while, then deteriorates again.

In any case, my Sony is now just a 3D Blu-ray player.  I use 2 Roku boxes, a Vizio TV with built in apps, and a computer.

Changing routers really helped.  Try these two models:  VIZIO XWR100 Dual-Band HD Wireless Internet Router

and the Asus

RT-N56U

Cisco and Linksys for some reason just do not do well with video streaming.  That and changing to the Google DNS seetings that was mentioned above has really helped.

i am not holding my breath but i watched four episodes of heroes back to back without a single pause or skip not to mention lord of the rings earlier. i guess i am in remission and not yet cured of this dreaded choppy slow playback disease

thanks for your reply

I dont get it but seems my problem is solved by dns and static ip address. i was literally getting a stop and refresh several times no matter what i was watching; now not at all. i have watched several streaming movies and episodes of Heroes and it has not skipped a beat.

i hope it lasts

I have a SONY blue ray disc player which sends my netflix movies to the TV through the HDMI port.  It got intolerably slow as it stopped to load content.   "Loading" appeared about 2 minutes and it took a few minutes to start running again.

I ran the same movies through the same internet connection off a laptop to the HDMI port on the tv and there was no issue.  So it was a SONY player problem.  SONY told me to reset my router and such but that was not a solution:  Here is the solution:

Manually set the IP address on the set up menu:

I have a linksys router so I used:

IP 192.168.1.110

subnet mask : 255.255.255.0

Change the primary and secondary DNS from AUTO to Manually set them:

primary DNS  :  8.8.8.8

secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

I used the 110 because I have several laptops and networked printers running.

Hey Rick

if you look back 4 posts, you will see that is exactly what i did and it worked for me as well. once or twice since the problem would come back but am 99% fixed. It is a sony dns issue does not make sense to me. But using the google dns of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 resolves so much better. I actually being a network guy, i changed the dns on my linksys router for my home network to use these as dns instead of comcast. Everything runs better now. best of luck

I tried these DNS settings with perhaps an improvement but still happens. What I dont get is the fluctaution in speed. i will go from 15mbs to 2.3 and then back. Funny thing is that i will check speed when all is fine and it will stream fine as low as 1.9 at times. Always seems to go flacky ar 2.4?

didn't see the post.  Wanted to share what works. I was getting pissed at netflix but it had nothing to do with them.  thanks for spreading the word.

glad it is working out for you, i too was frustrated with netflix and problem was sony all along. i dont know why they cant get their stuff together on this

best of luck

george

On my Sony Bluray player Network Settings, I changed:

primary DNS  :  8.8.8.8

secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

and it worked for me. (Left everything else the same.)

Thanks!
