It's way too early to make any bets on who's going to be nominated this year, especially since the studios tend to hold back on their big contenders until November and December. But among the movies that have been released so far this year, which do you think could be nominated? And for what?

Obviously Pixar's Up is going to be nominated for Best Animated Feature, but will Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs get one too? And what about Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo?

The Watchmen will probably get a nomination for some special effects along with Transformers ROTF.

But what else? Inglorious Basterds? (500) Days of Summer? District 9? Is Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story going to come up for a nomination as Best Documentary Feature?

Invicta? Amelia? Those two look like the early players.
Lovely Bones? The Informant? Shutter Island? Nine?
I was thinking movies that are out, that people have had a chance to actually see. Lovely Bones isn't out yet, not until December... Wikipedia says Shutter Island won't open until February 2010 and is it the movie Nine or the movie 9 you mean?
Well that's fine but those are two different questions. perhaps unfairly, most of the ones that have already come out will be mostly forgotten by Academy voters by the time they vote. What I think will be nominated and what I wish would be nominated are usually two different things. The Day-Lewis Nine.
You're right, it's two different things. I think we're still too far away from the nominations to have a realistic idea of who'll make it and who won't, so I thought we could start the season "softly" by asking which of this years pictures so far, you think could be nominated.

Oh, and you're too right about the Academy forgetting early releases. Damn shame.

Silence of the Lambs. 1-30-91 release. Oscar sweep 3-30-92, an astonishing 14 months later. There's always an exception — if you have a juggernaut like that one.
Going out on a far limb, I would guess that Merle Streep will be nominated for Julie and Julia. And also among obvious nominations is Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds.

I don't know if it will happen, but I would like to see Tilda Swinton nominated for Julia,
I've heard people talk about Christoph Waltz as well.
Just saw An Education this week. Features young British actress Carey Mulligan. Great film and she did a magnificent job opposite Peter Sarsgaard. Reminds of a young Audrey Hepburn. Couldn't help but think I was seeing a young star being born. Throw her name in the mix too!
Don't a lot of the nominated films come out in November and December? I also think it will be hard to beat Christophe Waltz.
Yes, a lot of the studios hold their top-shelf stuff to be released late in the year so that they will be fresh on the minds of Academy voters. Some won't even get a wide release until Jan, Feb. But as Professor stated above, occasionally one of better ones from earlier in the year will squeak through.

I also really liked the Hurt Locker and hope it manages to get some love. I know Jeremy Renner is getting some buzz from it.
Has anyone seen Amelia? Is it more of a critic pleasing movie than a public pleaser? I've heard some negative responses to that movie but I am anxious t see it.
