A made-for German television documentary, House of the Rising Punk travels to New York and gets down and dirty with notable faces in the early punk movement in New York City—Patti Smith, Dee Dee Ramone, Richard Hell (Richard Hell and The Voidoids), and Tom Verlaine (Television).
This one-hour music documentary manages to cram in all the major players and extract a cohesive and entertaining tale from authoritative voices. This is a concise and condensed version of the tale that is most successful in attaining a gritty sense of place: the danger and excitement of the Bowery circa ’70s, anecdotal tales reinforcing the spirit of a long-gone era of bums falling to the street from flophouse windows, terrifying drug scores in Alphabet City, and paying $42 a month in rent. Lower Manhattan may have changed irreversibly – and the house where punk rose may now be a high-end fashion shop – but the music lives on.
