Vic Chesnutt (1964 - 2009)

Vic Chesnutt was one of the most revered singer/songwriters of the last 20 years. He was injured in a car accident at age 19 and became partially paralyzed. He soon realized he could still play guitar and he devoted his energy to songwriting and recording. Chesnutt was exposed to a wider audience with the release of the tribute album Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation, whose proceeds go to the Sweet Relief Fund. Sweet Relief is a nonprofit group that offers medical support for musicians. The album consisted of Chesnutt covers by a wide group of his admirers including Garbage, The Smashing Pumpkins , Madonna, (fellow Athens GA and Chesnutt's champion and early producer) R.E.M. Soul Asylum, Cracker, Indigo Girls, Nanci Griffith, Hootie and the Blowfish and Live.
Chesnutt leaves hundreds of excellent songs from his two-decade career. Chesnutt sang darkly comic and often disarmingly candid songs about death, vulnerability, and life’s simple joys. "Other people write about the bling and the booty. I write about the pus and the gnats. To me, that's beautiful."
On his last release, he wrote a song, "Flirted With You All My Life,” which is about his suicidal tendencies. In a recent interview, he spoke of his thoughts about his death, "I’ve attempted suicide a couple of times and I think about things such as that. They have a kind of love/hate relationship with death. I do, in some ways. That’s what I say in the song – “tease me with your sweet relief.” The song is about realizing that I don’t want to die. I want to live."
Vic Chesnutt had attempted suicide a number of times and yesterday he finally succeeded.

Anyone else notice that the selection of CLASSICAL MUSIC performances is very slim in 'Watch Instantly'?

Jazz fans who also appreciate the development of musical talent in youngsters might want to check out "CHOPS" (available on 'Watch Instantly).
