For me it would have been in '92 during Comedy Central's Thanksgiving marathon.
Both my sister and I were home from college for the weekend, and I just happened to by flipping through the channels on the tiny 12-inch screen I had in my old bedroom, when I found it. I was laughing so hard my sister had to find out what I was watching. Next thing we know, the two of us had been sitting there all day watching.
aw. sniff. now I'm all nostalgic.
I don't remember the year - it was when commedy central was still comedy channel.
I think it was a "Gamera" episode.
a love affair was born
NOw I'm such a dork i have old "bootleg" copies of the MST3k they did before they had the deal & were only on minnesota cable access.
I have no clue when i found it or what movie it was but is was golden. wasn't there originally a different host than the one that was on in the later eps? I seem to think i remeber that lol.
yeah sensei....joel was first (goofy, loveable, the original "creator", more songs in skits) and then Mike came along ( more sarcastic & blue collar....)
they also had "invention exchanges" w/ joel and then discontinued later in series.
some were hilarious.
the "evils" (dr. forrester & TV's Frank) were the best too...and later went away to be replaced by what most fans (and myself) hated: pearl forrester, bobo the monkey and "brain guy" (ok, he was ok)
if you check this forum for the post about alternate projects, both mike & joel have really neat projects now going on that are just like mst3k.
Watched Manos with a couple of acquaintances then realized it was on Comedy Central. Way back in the day. Watched an awful lot of it. A close friend of mine recorded many, many episodes and went hunting for the one's he didn't have. So I've seen my share.
i am a huge fan of Elvira' s Movie Macabre. And one day, Netflix suggested a MST3K to me. I love the idea of commentary during B-movies, I usually do it myself. So, I added one to my queue- Teenagers from Puter Space. It was pretty funny. My next was Girl in the Gold Boots- I was hooked after that one!!!
I first discovered it back in 1993 when I saw a preview on Comedy Central. However, I did not bother watching it until 1998 when I noticed my cousin watching it and laughing. I watched it with her and also found the jokes humorous.

this past summer, my local cineplex decided to show old b-movies every thursday night(Attack of the Killer B's, they call it) so, while running down the list of selections (giant gilla monster, bucket of blood, dementia 13) I noticed they were going to show Tormented and upon investigating just exactly what this movie was I saw Netflix had it with the mystery science theater treatment so I inserted it at the top of my queue. I had never watched a MST movie before but I was vaguely aware of the format, so, with Tormented I took the plunge. Well, needless to say, I am now a Mstie fan(as of this writing I've seen Mitchell, Gunslinger, MST-the movie and vol. 12 is headed to my house after I just bid for it on ebay). Ironically I was not able to attend the screening of Tormented at the cineplex last Thursday but am going to their grand finale tonight, showing FOUR flicks-The Bat,Werewolf in a girls dormitory,House by the cemetary and Night of the living dead
