Permalink Reply by David on August 10, 2011 at 5:58pm Don't see Titanic -- I assume you mean the James Cameron version. It goes on for days and it seems like the real Titanic sank faster.
If you're interested in the subject, and don't wanna spend the time on a nifty documentary made about the disaster, try A Night to Remember. It's far and away the best of the "fiction" films.
Permalink Reply by sevenstars on August 10, 2011 at 7:01am I haven't seen Titanic either. Just nothing about it interests me at all.
Avatar is nothing much.
Permalink Reply by Lilly on August 10, 2011 at 2:32pm When I went to see Titanic at the theaters the projection system broke down (I think it actually fell off the wall). I took it as a sign and have never watched it.
I watched a National Geographic documentary about Robert Ballard, the guy that discovered the titanic with Alvin, the submersible. It was very cool. Ballard seems to be a good scientist and a very interesting speaker. He seems more interesting than all of James Cameron's special effects.

The top 3 most rented Netflix DVDs: The Blind Side, Crash and The Bucket List
Famous Classics: Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Lawrence of Arabia and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Throw Titanic, The Hangover 1 and 2 and It's A Wonderful Life on the pile too
Permalink Reply by Just Gus on August 10, 2011 at 1:43pm Crash is definitely worth catching (IMHO).
I'm surprised that there is an American who hasn't seen It's a Wonderful Life. Around the holidays it is omnipresent on tv. (I've always argued it is a socializing agent for potential suicides).

Permalink Reply by Lilly on August 10, 2011 at 2:35pm Lawrence of Arabia is probably the most watchable of the movies you listed. It's an interesting story and looks beautiful.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is Stewart overacting to fantastic effect. It's like a Citizen Kane of morality. I would recommend it, but only when you feel like doing your homework.
Permalink Reply by madstork on August 10, 2011 at 6:51pm I've always wanted to see Lawrence of Arabia but the run time always stops me from putting it at the top of my queue. I'm afraid the disk would sit around my house for a long time before I would have the time/inclination to tackle it.
My family has always watched sports during the holidays, so we generally choose bad bowl games and basketball over sappy Christmas classics. Plus, I'm not a Jimmy Stewart fan. Even in the great Hitchcock movies he's in, I've always felt like he's hamming it up and is completely unnatural. I have saw parts of It's A Wonderful Life though, it is hard to miss.
Permalink Reply by Lilly on August 13, 2011 at 3:33am Lawrence of Arabia doesn't really have a boring part; it transitions through its story with great skill. I never felt the need to get up and abandon it. If you find yourself impatient with war films, then yes, delay this one. If you find yourself easily carried away by the scope of an 'epic' or WW film, put it to the top of your queue. And get the wide-screen version! David Lean was an artist.
