Documentaries: The Good, the Bad, and the Quandaries 92 Replies

Good stories don't always need writers. I'm loathe to admit it, but some things write themselves and sometimes there just needs to be a guy with a camera close by with the stamina to edit the tape (the writer can take his toys and go home!). Others…Continue

OOPS! Made a mistake Sevorin....

LAST movie I saw in a THEATER was "District 9". Interesting, but not Oscar worthy. The LOTR was the LAST movie I actually was entertained by. It was made in New Zealand, not the U.S. My bad. I couldn't name you the last purely American acted and produced movie I've seen in a theater.

Movies don't do it for me anymore, but movie series do. REASON? A 2 hour movie isn't enough time for character generation, so you rarely if ever are satisfied by the outcome. Your never left with REAL closure. That's why we're going to see more series (movie) on TV now, as it begins to replace movies. People are motivated by home entertainment, and character progression. You never get that anymore in the theater, but trather just LOUD SFX and visual computer generated effects. That's why I've embraced Netflix up until now. I may switch over to Amazon in the near future if they keep upgrading their selections.

What movies do you like, Myth?

====================

Last movie (American) that I was SERIOUSLY interested in was the Lord of The Rings trilogy, and will be for the upcoming HOBBIT flick. Not a Sci-Fi guy TOTALY (space generated ones mostly), or a fantasy guy either, but they are out there to grab my attention.

Last thing I just watched was the Canadian produced "Stargate-Universe" series, but it was just a rip off of the just completed series BSG. Still some bad acting going on there, but the Scottish actor Carlyle (SP) stole that series from the start. Guy is a pretty good actor. Last American acted movie I saw was The Fighter with Mark Wahlburg and Christian Bale whom I like. Wahlburg can't act, but Bale can....so there ya go with that one.

Other than this that and the other thing I like documentaries on history and space. The "Universe" series is good, but has it's flaws like any other series when theories are explained away as facts now. Hate that crap. If it's a THEORY now...it should be explained as such on the show...etc. I just want facts, not a hosts personal opinion(s).

Other than that....catch ya on the flip side.

Don't go to the movies (American) much anymore due to the poor quality of American actors and their scripts. I mostly follow European movies and TV shows. I can count the last time I went to the movies over the last 10-15 years on one hand. With the expansion of HDTV and 5.1-7.1 home theater, I just don't see why (kids, cell phones, talking to name a few) unless the next Star Wars series (perhaps if Peter Jackson bought the rights to Mass Effect, and turned it into a great space trilogy), I might see that. I just can't stand the mass media in this country anymore.

I think the best action pack films I liked are 1) Faceoff-John Travolta/Nick Cage & Next- Nick Cage. I know that there are others I like but these two topped with the technology, action packed and intrigue. I found myself just in awe watching these movies, never for a second wanting to take my eyes off the screen. To me thats a great movie

Welcome insightful39!

We have a few discussions that tie in to the action film genre:

Also I started a group called Heist Films If that is your bag.  (a shameless plug for another of my groups!)

My favorite action films are westerns....the original action genre....the Mother of All Action films...and of course, for that we have Western Roundup (I'll always whore for my original group--probably my best group in its day...no offense No Man's Land--my current bestus group)

With all the technology of today movies are at there best. There's nothing like a high tech, action packed movie filled with intrigue, that makes my night.
