I love Larry Miller. He did this great bit about the difference between when women go to strip clubs, and when men go. I can't find it online, or else I'd post it.

I also like Lisa Landry a lot. I saw her stand-up on Comedy Central, and it was hysterical. You could tell the audience really liked her too. I wouldn't be surprised if she became a household name in the future.

Carlin is a given. I'm also partial to Dennis Miller. I liked Frank Caliendo when I first heard of him - he desperately needs new material, but his arsenal of amazing impressions is second to none.

Steven Wright, Cosby and Seinfeld all have their place with me, depending on my mood. Joe Rogan is a guilty pleasure of mine as well.

'Cause you know what they should do with guys on pedestals....

You know too much to live, bees.

I think I'd appreciate Carlin's exultation at the doom of mankind a bit more if he fleshed it out with some dirty words.

Gee, Sev. I know you said (in another group) that you've sworn off reading, but isn't his glee at the annihilation of the human race close enough to "the Carlin" you're describing?

I'm not in a contest with you. I was just sharing and noting a mutual fandom. Or are you climbing up on a pedestal where nobody can join you in your rarified appreciation of Lenny, George, Richard, or Sam? 'Cause you know what they should do with guys on pedestals....

Thank you, bees.

But that passage exemplifies the philosophic Carlin, the modestly misanthropic Carlin, the clear-headed Carlin.

What I most prefer is the Carlin who said, "Now here's another group of people who should be thrown screaming from helicopters . . ." or "-- who should be strangled in front of their children . . ." or "-- who should be locked in an outhouse and burned . . ." or "-- who should be castrated with fishing knives."

That's the Carlin I miss, along with the Carlin who talked about the 24-hour super-macho ass-kicking contest, whose Last Man Standing is put up on a pedestal where "we shoot him in the fucking head."

The vicious, evil-tempered Carlin, the Carlin with venom dribbling out the corners of his mouth. How can we ever replace him?

For Sevorin

Saint Lenny Bruce, for making me laugh to a point of lunacy, for being the first to cry out "cocksucker" when even Redd Foxx and Moms Mabley hid in the weeds, and who was martyred for it.

Richard Pryor, for carrying on the cause of dirty words.

George Carlin, for lasting so long, for being willing to change, for keeping acid on his tongue all the way to the finish, and for honoring dirty words.

Sam Kinison, for proving that someone who was not Jewish, not black, not Catholic, and not city-born could still use dirty words and be funny.

These are the Apostles, the ones who uttered The Truth in its purest state. All else is commentary.

I like Bees' idea of using the instant viewing section. Maybe we could go through that selection first, since it's easiest, and then go to rentals through the mail? I'm up for anything; two that I'd like to see in particular are The Lenny Bruce Performance Film and Drew Hastings.
