Mary Tamm, the original Romana, passed away today after a long fight with cancer.

Romanadvoratrelundar will always be my favorite Companion, as Tom Baker was my Doctor. Sad she had to suffer that way. RIP.

My fave was always Leela, but Mary's portrayal gave some glamor to what had until then been almost ordinary, and rightfully so, I suppose; you can't upstage the doctor. But they realized this and their banter in "The Ribos Operation" gave a whole new meaning to the companion--an intellectual equal.Which annoyed Tom's Doctor. It's also fun to hear them together in the audio commentaries they did for certain discs. You could tell Tom was smitten.
I'd only ever seen her in one other production; the David Sutchet portrayal of Poirot in the episode/story, "The Dream". She will be missed.
