What happened to that Orson Welles/Peter O'Tool vid?

I don't think any of the "crowd" scenes work in Titus. As you point out, the sequences involving the central characters are the most powerful.

As for Hamlet, let's continue the discussion here (line readings, even Mr. Kingsley's, don't do it for me).

Speaking of Hamlet, I just saw a bit on it by Ben Kingsley in his interview on Inside the Actors Studio. Have you seen it? I found it remarkable.

P.S. You're not saying you preferred Branagh's Hamlet, are you?

What is natural about that? Most unnatural. But...

the shots of the "street-filled' (sic?) Roman legions I believe is only in what you might call the admittedly odd preface of the film. The Anthony Hopkins/Jessica Lange meat of the thing, the girl with twigs for hands, the hanging squirming bodies of his enemies children, the wonderous meat pies... Good God, it's a feast of a movie.

Hey, Welcome, br77. Naturally, I disagree vehemently with your assessment of Taymor's Titus, but why not start a Titus discussion? I'd love to hear you defend those long, boring, pan shots of street-filled Roman legions. And I wouldn't pick up Mel Gibson's Hamlet in a dollar store.
