This odd version of Richard III (1983), produced by the BBC, is highly regarded as one of the best on film. Speaking of the BBC productions, a lively summary of the entire catalog…Continue

Comment by Ando on February 5, 2013 at 2:30am I don't think any of the "crowd" scenes work in Titus. As you point out, the sequences involving the central characters are the most powerful.
As for Hamlet, let's continue the discussion here (line readings, even Mr. Kingsley's, don't do it for me).
Comment by br77 on February 5, 2013 at 1:38am Speaking of Hamlet, I just saw a bit on it by Ben Kingsley in his interview on Inside the Actors Studio. Have you seen it? I found it remarkable.

P.S. You're not saying you preferred Branagh's Hamlet, are you?
Comment by br77 on February 5, 2013 at 1:27am What is natural about that? Most unnatural. But...
the shots of the "street-filled' (sic?) Roman legions I believe is only in what you might call the admittedly odd preface of the film. The Anthony Hopkins/Jessica Lange meat of the thing, the girl with twigs for hands, the hanging squirming bodies of his enemies children, the wonderous meat pies... Good God, it's a feast of a movie.
Comment by Ando on February 4, 2013 at 9:49pm Hey, Welcome, br77. Naturally, I disagree vehemently with your assessment of Taymor's Titus, but why not start a Titus discussion? I'd love to hear you defend those long, boring, pan shots of street-filled Roman legions. And I wouldn't pick up Mel Gibson's Hamlet in a dollar store.
