The problem is more in the fact that you have no control over the way the picture is displayed. An SD stream is always stretched. It wouldn't look as bad if it was pillarboxed or zoomed. I have a 30Mbps cable connection, so it's not to do with that.
Netflix is not for everyone, it's really that simple. Personally I love it, but different people have different needs and wants.

Have you found the page for NF HD selections? It's here if you haven't. That's what's available, and it's same the for paid or trial subscriptions.
If NF doesn't suit your needs, get rid of it.
