"There's an expensive and inexpensive way to go about this, 1) buy a region free DVD player then buy the PAL version and 2) buy the PAL version and convert it to NTSC by ripping it on your PC."

I've read almost everything that he (and his kids) have published. It's my firm belief he was quite insane. The massive drug consumption had absolutely nothing to do with it, that was just a side effect. Of course, I'd say the same thing about me, too.
