First of all I wear the label of "a downbeat queen" - I love depressing movies, ah lets correct that... I love poignant, though provoking depressing movies! LOL I don't gravitate to fluffy, happy ending kind of films. There is nothing wrong with happy endings, but a lot of Hollywood stuffs are so superficial and unbelievably unrealistic.
I also have a great interest in movies about or related to the holocaust. Somewhere in Africa falls into that category. It stands out to me because it's tackling the subject of holocaust from a different angle. The main characters actually managed to escape to Africa, from Germany. It tells the story how they dealt with what was going on in Nazi Germany, while having to adjust to a strange culture and tried to survive at the same time. I think it's pretty powerful.
