M.A.D., or “Mutual Assured Destruction,” is a term coined to depicted the stalemate that keeps a world addicted to nuclear weapons in balance. The logic is that “if you know that I’ll kill you if you try to kill me, then we’re both safe.” This film is a about a tragically M.A.D. relationship between two people living in Germany. She’s a suicidal twenty-something German yearning to escape her nagging parents who have thrown her into a mental ward. He’s a depressive thirty-something man who for unknown reasons is just suited for self-destruction. The attractive young woman sees marrying him as a ticket out of Germany. The aging guy goes along with it because he just has nothing else to wreck that particular day. Wouldn’t you know they’d fall into something that appears to be love? This psalm of co-dependency threads across country lines and descends to depths so low that you wonder when, not if, these two will kill each other or be killed by someone else. If you ever viewed the critically-acclaimed 1986 film “Sid & Nancy” (biopic of punkers Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen), you’ll understand the unsheathed hot wire energy levels in this film. An artistically sound film, with relieving wisps of lightheartedness to carry us through the miserable overtones. Loud, discordant music, flashing strobe lights and nudity.
