AfroPixFlix knew this would be a funky German soul jam when the first chords of Bill Cosby and Quincy Jones’ “Hikky Burr” played during the opening frames of this flick. If you like good old fashioned funk music mixed into your modern German comedies, take a seat and tuck into this tale of two German brothers struggling to make a go of a young-at-heart restaurant in a gritty Germany warehouse district. Sure, there are more weird characters than necessary to fill the plotlines, but it’s all in the spirit of fun. One brother is a hard working restaurant owner who’s dazzled by his upper class girlfriend. She in turn is a career-minded lady who is tires of her beau’s obsession with work. The other brother is a ne’er-do-well convict who threatens to squander the restaurant, but has a couple of good intentions of his own. As a menu item, Soul Kitchen is not a bad appetizer to start off a fun evening of contemporary German film by eclectic director Fatih Akin. A 4 star AfroPixFlix selection du jour.Fillet of Soul
