Some of the Gay Films I Love!!!

I just want to list some of these films that I personally loved watching and think that some of these bring something different to the table. Remember that I swing towards the darker side of films so some of these are a tad depressing but still, they are not the typical aids ridden, depressing dramas. These have developed a different kind of angst for their characters. For depressing aids dramas you can watch In the Gloaming for that.

Maurice

Bent

Brokeback Mountain

The Dying Gaul This one is slow and a bit pretentious but I love Campbell Scott

Johns

Mysterious Skin

The Mudge Boy

L.I.E.
With these last three movies listed, you can see the wonderful talents just beginning in Joseph Gordon Levitt, Emile Hirsch and Paul Dano. Simply amazing what these boys did in these films.

Cruising

I will list more as we go along and I remember what the heck I've seen over the years. If you have seen some of these, feel free to discuss as you all will have really different views of these that I can't possibly have due to my not being a gay man.

Oh dear. Very different films. TST is about a drag queen who finds love, loses love, finds it again, builds a family, and then faces down his bitter jewish mother (played PERFECTLY by diva Ann Bancroft).

LC is about a group of gay men coming to terms with the early onset of the AIDS crisis... strong themes of desperation, helplessness, and anxiety as their worlds crash down around them. Very poignant. Definitely the best AIDS-related film.

How's about A Home at the End of the World? Collin Ferrell playing ambiguous sexuality? It's different.

Yes it is in my list. He was so simple yet you felt the love he had for both lead characters.

I loved it especially because of the ambiguity. I don't believe in a black & white world. While it's doubtful that I'll ever have sex with a woman or vote Republican, I've done a lot of things I never thought I'd do. And some people are a little more grey than others. It was great fun though.

I have not see The Dying Gaul & Johns yet so I was going to add it to my Q but it was already there.

The Mudge Boy was sad, but wonderfully told story to me. Although, taking advantage of the simple minded, even if they are gay is just somehow wrong to me.

I loved Bent, Brokeback, & Mysterious.

L.I.E. has been recommended by NF to me for sometime, but I haven't Q'ed it because the description of the movie just doesn't grab me. What was you opinion about it.

LIE is an indy that you can download on your laptop.... It looks and feels like an indy, but a good one. The young kid is great and so is Brian Cox. I wrote a review of it if you care to read it/... it will give you some further insight into the plot. Brian Cox is the predator (he's great as well). The ending is really quick and shocking... so be prepared.

Yes Yes... I think Home At The End Of The World falls into the genre of pansexualism... or something similar. I did like it, but I think that there is room to make a film that really explores the concept of true sexual/romantic "unusualness" (if that makes sense). I'd like to see a movie that kind of examines a group of people who sort of celebrate and accept the idea of a sexually libertine lifestyle... maybe set in a commune or in a house with 5 or 6 individuals living as a "couple". Of course, if Hollywood did it, it would be all dark and shit and people would die or have nervous breakdowns or something. blech.

Tear jerking AIDS dramas ... That is so true for In the Gloaming as well as, It's My Party, Philadelphia, An Early Frost, And The Band Played On, Love, Valor, Compassion (this one has some comedy as well)

Once my brain gets going I can't stop it. Even if my memory is crap sometimes ... still embarassed about TST & LC
