There goes the neighborhood... Movies about the destruction of Earth

Call me what you will but nothing makes me happier then a meteor screaming towards earth on a collision course.. What do you think is the greatest Earth destruction movie of all times? Also what is your favorite manner of destruction, alien, natural, or other?

For me Deep Impact, 28 Days Later (may not be total world destruction but I think it fits), and Independence Day are my top 3.

Donnie Darko and any number of zombie movies. I don't think there are really any natural disaster/meteor kind of movies that I've loved.

Oops, I take that back. 12 Monkeys.

12 Monkeys.. Nice choice, I love that movie as well.

Definitely 12 Monkeys was great, but are we talking Earth destruction only or movies where humanity is wiped out but the Earth is not? Or pish posh semantics?

Pish Posh semantics my good man...

Is Donnie Darko an end of the world movie? I always kind of liked this movie, but, call me dumb, I never quite got it. I also haven't seen the director's cut yet...

That's the whole thing. The world is going to end, depending on his choice. It's a really tough movie to "get". It's pretty out there and there's the whole "Philosophy of Time Travel" thing that is spelled out a lot more in the director's cut, but that's a far inferior version of the film..lol. There's all of that controlled living and controlled dead, the objects and portals...I love it, but I've literally seen it over 50 times. I always recommend for this one, to really understand wth he's doing you have to watch the original theatrical cut, then watch the deleted scenes and listen to Kelly's commentary. If you're still intrigued (most people are hooked by this point if it really resonates or hate it with a passion if it doesn't) then the director's cut really kind of beats you over the head and has a lot more information. I'm not sure the "Philosophy" stuff is necessary to get the picture that everyone is someone controlled to make matters come about before the cataclysm, even though they don't know what they are doing.

Nicely put.

Natural is my favorite way. I do get tired of the 'scientist nobody believes until it's too late' cliche though.

Mars Attacks ;-)

Signs is one of my non-spoof favorites. I much prefer alien destruction to natural disaster.

Signs wasn't really a destruction movie was it?

I wondered about that. It was aliens attacking so I went with it. I can replace with War of the Worlds if that is better suited though I like the mass destruction in that one more than the storyline.
