There goes the neighborhood... Movies about the destruction of Earth

Call me what you will but nothing makes me happier then a meteor screaming towards earth on a collision course.. What do you think is the greatest Earth destruction movie of all times? Also what is your favorite manner of destruction, alien, natural, or other?

For me Deep Impact, 28 Days Later (may not be total world destruction but I think it fits), and Independence Day are my top 3.

Which War of the Worlds?? To me the 1953 version was better. but it does cheese up compared to the 2005 version, IMO only due to the FX department of today

I can't believe it but I haven’t seen the 1953 version (just added to my Q, looking forward to it!) so 2005 for now.

Cool thread!!! here is my list

Earth Shattering Disasters

I think I prefer the Mother nature type rather than the space destruction, although the Human Nature type like 28 Days Later, 12 Monkeys are defiantely favorites

Good list! I notice you don't have Armageddon on there. Is that because you are a Ben Affleck hater like almost everyone else on here? Or is it like the Beatles/Rolling Stones argument: you either like Deep Impact or you like Armageddon? :) Me, I like Armageddon solely because that's the "asteroid hurling towards earth" film that had Steve Buscemi (okay fine, and also because Ben was looking fine in that one). ;)

Of the two, I prefer Deep Impact. It was just more compelling for me. Talk about a cliched movie review term:compelling. ; )

Well I don't have Armageddon in that list because the asteroid didn't quite make it to Earth like it did in Deep Impact.

Actually I Love both films. I am not a Ben hater, but for me Bruce makes Armageddon.

I'm more prone to liking the "unbelievable" ones with natural disasters. I find it to hard to believe that aliens will travel all this distance just to blow us up.

Course if theirs is a "stupid" society such as ours (selfish, self centered, depleted natural resources, poisoning their atmosphere, killing their planet etc) Then I suppose they could be here to "take" Earth from us. Those are the "Put up your Dukes" flicks, which I like too, but not for the same reason.

The Day After Tomorrow
Armageddon
The Day After
The Core
Earthstorm
The Day of the Triffids

These are just a few I've seen that I liked.

If you like unbelievable, you have to try Dante's Peak. It's so stupid in parts, it's hysterical.

Oh gosh, I thought I was the only one who had seen Triffids, that is really funny...

my Dad always talked about seeing this movie when he was a kid and being creeped out by the sounds they made.

Dr. Strangelove
Dr. Who: Season 1: Disc 1: The End of the World epsisode (surprisingly nature not aliens).

Not a movie, but available on Netflix: Odyssey 5. Another fine Showtime series that got the axe after just 1 season, even though it was one of their highest-rated original shows. Gotta admit there's some cheese and whine, as some of the Netflix reviews attest, but a great watch nonetheless, of the mysterious-alien-conspiracy type. Right up there with Firefly and Farscape on my list of great sci-fi series.

I really like to call this type of movie "END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT". I't hard for me to pick a #1 fav.movie of any type but I like all the versions of I am Legend.
